Weight in the left heel

Just read a tip yesterday that when you start the downswing, you should feel the weight transferred to the back of the left heel.

I tried it today and had good success. I have been struggling off of the tee lately, pull hooks and slices. Also, have been hooking my irons.

This weight in the left heel method really gave me a feeling of leverage pulling the club into the ball.

Has anyone else heard of or used this tip ?

What do you think of it's merits ?

Any fault of this type of thinking ?

Re: Weight in the left heel

Hi Modore,

Going from pull hooks to slices doesn't sound like a weight transfer problem - it is more than likely a problem of being too 'handsy'. Try GregJWillis's right hand drill If you are trying to get a good feel of weight transfer, try Greg's walking drill.

When you start your dwonswing make sure you are not swatting at the ball. Just as your club is reaching the top of your backswing you want to start the downswing with your lower body. Drive your right knee towards your target. This transfers your weight to your left foot and starts your hip rotation. Your hips will rotate around your left leg (which should act like a gate post - sturdy and stable). With your hips turning towards your target, they will start to pull your torso into the rotation towards the target. Your arms are forced to follow - you do not need to swing your arms at the ball - they come naturally.
