I understand that for full swings with short irons, the body weight should essentially be set on the front foot and left there throughout the complete swing. Is this correct? Are there any other swing matters to adhere to? How does this differ from a reverse pivot? Which clubs could be used for this swing - say SW PW 9 8 7 irons only or could 6 5 or any others also be included? ![]()

| Re: short irons full swing I personally havent heard of your weight remaining on the front foot for short irons? Chip shots, pitches, maybe 60 yard or so shots you could keep your weight on your front foot. I think it promotes a ball-then-turf strike. But for full swings i have always heard to pivot correctly. Reverse pivoting would be keeping your weight on your left foot on the backswing then transfering it to your right cmin down to impact. I believe some pros have weight on their left side throughout the swing (monty? hogan?), but i dunno if many then transfer that weight to their back foot on the downswing..doubt it.

Re: short irons full swing I use the same swing for ever club on my full shots. I do change the ball position so the ball is in the middle of my stance, where I have it closer to my left foot with mid to long irons and a little my closer for fairway woods. The only other difference I notice is the swing plane is more up and down with my short iron.

Re: short irons full swing I've heard for chip shots to keep your weight forward - but never for full shots.

while still on the subject of short irons I wonder, particularly for pitching and sand wedge shots, whether you swing the clubs like a middle or long irons. What I'm really trying to say is whether you would square the clubface at impact. What I tend to do is taking the club back already "squared" with the ball (if you know what I mean) and just maintain that "squared" club position on the way back in the downswing? My shots often go astray and wonder if what I'm doing is correct but just not doing it properly or am I totally wrong! Would appreciate any suggestions.

Re: short irons full swing To keep the club squared back and through, you'd have to completely lock your wrists - like a chip with a biiiig backswing. You'd be further ahead to take a normal shot (like Gord says), but shorten the backswing - try stopping with 1/4 backswing, 1/2 backswing, 3/4 backswings, and note their distances. Then use those distances and backswing stops to gauge your shots. Swing normally - and watch your shots take your normal shot pattern!

Re: short irons full swing When we talk about backswings Full backswing is 12 oclock half a backswing is 9 oclock so a three quarter backswing will be 10:30 Generally the length of my followthrough is the same length as my backswing these will give you more consistancy than trying to hit a slow full swing,as the others have said square face at impact, you cannot hold it square all the way back it will lead to horrible things like swaying , dipping and hands trying to seperate.

Re: short irons full swing Just a note about follow through (fun to try and fun to see). If you keep your follow through low, your ball flight will be low. If you finish full and high, your ball flight will be full and high. Try it on pitches and see the difference. A full follow through helps to promote swinging, not hitting at the ball.
