Follow through position as pre shot routine

Had a great tip from a low handicapper friend of mind that I though i'd share with some and get some clarification from some low handicappers

He suggested having a pre shot routine where you put your hands and arms in the perfect follow through position (i.e high hands, arms fully extended and pointing about 45deg left of target)

He then said your only swing thought should be to turn your hips/shoulders through to get the arms/hands back into the same position. This he said encouraged a swing through the back of the ball, rather than a hit down at the ball. I tried it this weekend and it really does help

Does anyone else do this ?

Re: Follow through position as pre shot routine

Teachers, including me, use that technique quite often where students don't follow-through properly or hit the ball and then stop. Fairly often, I get students to get into the finish position, swing back to the top of the backswing and then back to impact. This drill was made popular by Jim Flick, a Golf Digest Top-10 teacher.

It does work quite well as a drill, but a far more important aspect of how you are applying it is that you are building a pre-shot routine. A PSR is very important to build consistency and mental and physical triggers.

Re: Follow through position as pre shot routine

I think the key mental note is that it tells you where you arms should be at just before the finish of the swing and you feel the extension. The swing is then trying to use the body to get the arms into that same position. Thats it. No hitting down, release thoughts etc, just turn the body to get high hands and extended arms. To do that you must 'swing' the club down and up

Worked for me anyway
