Over the top???

I have been hitting low left to left hooks with my woods. I can feel myself coming over the top, delofting the club but I cant seem to stop doing it. I have a very early release I guess, hands to active. Any drills to fix this? Thanks

Re: Over the top???

I've had the same problem. If you can feel that you are doing it that is a big plus as opposed to not feeling it. When this starts happening to me with my woods or any club for that matter, I just take a step back and work my swing in slow motion. In slow motion you can stop and fix your swing at the point that it goes wrong. Practicing this in slow motion dedicates it back to muscle memory for me and before long I'm off and runnin' again. Take it slow and easy, it's work, but it does payoff. Atleast for me. Hope that helps.

Re: Over the top???

To start off with a very simple swing thought, I suggest:

When you reach the top of your backswing, start the transition by turning your hips back towards the left and pull your right elbow close to your right hip while trying to keep your back and right shoulder facing the target until your arms are well into the downswing.

Remember your shoulders don't have to move far from address to the top to address and then to the finish. In all, they move maybe 2 ft.

This will stop your right shoulder from lifting and coming over the top.

Try that ... if it doesn't really cure the problem, post again and we can go to more complex stuff and drills but try the simple cures first.

Re: Over the top???

Sweeet, ill give those a shot. Played today for the first time in about 3 weeks, and was very aggrivated with my Teeball and woods. I told the guy I was with Id rather slice a ball 90degrees right than hit those ugly low duck hooks, and he just laughed. Guess I better be carefull what I wish for

Re: Over the top???

Also, think of the target line extending straight back from your ball. As you take the club away (slowly), ensure it is getting a little inside that line this should keep you from picking it up to straight and get you in a better position to come with an inside approach. Think of bringing the butt of your grip towards the ball as you start down and let the right knee start your downswing keeping the right elbow in tight to your side.

Re: Over the top???

When practicing I always ask a friend to grab the club head at the top of my backswing. Then I turn the lower body towards the target. When you swing without somebody gripping the club, you should try and get the feeling of turning towards the target whilst leaving you hands at the top of the backswing.

Re: Over the top???

So turning your lower body before starting down with your downswing should help coming across/over the top?

Re: Over the top???

Not nessecarily - if you have a shallow backswing and a steep downswing you will still come over the top. Make sure you are high enough in your backswing to ensure that you do not come over the top. As for Paul's advice, this is a very good drill - you should always start your downswing with your lower body.
