Wearing out palm in golf glove, Ok so I've got buddies in from out of town and have played 72 holes in the last 2 days, I played horrible, I wore out my glove in the palm where you see so many other golfers do. I know this isn't good as pros never have this problem but what correlation does it have with the swing, ie, what does it cause? I'm self taught and have read over and over again how most golfers grip the club too tight, is this a case where I should grip tighter? any drills or swing thoughts? thanks,

Re: Wearing out palm in golf glove, Just to second Mizunoman. My CPGA instructor mentioned the same thing - how I'm holding the club in my palm, and not in my fingers. The butt of the club should be held by the pad of your hand. If you splay your fingers and thumbs (open your hand wide), and lay a ruler down the line of your thumb, the ruler will lay on the pad I'm talking about. Between that pad and the forefinger, the club can be held quite securely.

Re: Wearing out palm in golf glove, thank you both, I don't mean to sound too involved here but when you say "grip the club with the last segment of the fingers where they meet the palm" but when I do this do I bring my hand up from underneath the club handle or from the side, I know this may sound crazy, but it makes a difference. The ruler analogy helps. thanks guys.

Re: Wearing out palm in golf glove, As for grip pressure: Have a friend begin to pull the club out of your hand as you would normally hold it at address. Begin to lighten the pressure so it just starts to slip. That is what your pressure should be.

Re: Wearing out palm in golf glove, To check if you are gripping correctly, buy a new glove and check for the wear. It should now be on the pad near the wrist, below your little finger. Almost all gloves are reinforced in this area to allow for the wear. You should also notice some light wear at the base of the fingers although it shouldn't be much more than a light scuffing it your grip pressure is correct.

Re: Wearing out palm in golf glove, I know what you're going through, VI, as I had to address the same problem this year. The way I start to take my grip is by letting my arm hang freely at my side. This puts my palm pretty much perpendicular to the floor, back of my hand facing the target. Then I put the club in my lead hand, and grip it. Next, I add my other hand, and address the ball. A quick knuckle check lets me know if I'm too strong or too weak. I prefer a slightly weak grip (2 knuckles only). When I first started, I had the proper grip (fingers and pad), but it was too strong at address (4 knuckles). Once you start using this grip more, you'll fully understand what I mean by knuckles - it'll also help you figure out some ball flights (if your grip is too strong or weak).
