scooping ball/flipping wrist

I have been playing golf off and on for the last 10 years . I shoot anywhere from the mid 80's to the mid 90's. I have worked with a pro a few times in the past and have been told by many that I have a beautiful swing.

A problem that I have had for years is that I flip my wrist/scoop the ball at impact causing me to hit very high shots. I am 6'4'" and get plenty of distance even with the high shots but I lack consistency. I tend to hook alot of shots because I flip and roatate my hands so much that I close the club face and it is rare for me to take a divot. I would really like to lower the ball flight, put some spin on the ball and gain that consistency that has been eluding me.

I know my hands need to be ahead of the club head at impact but I have always had trouble achieving that. What are some drills I can do on the range to help me get those hands and wrist in the correct position at impact. I have tried the drill you see in every book and magazine, the one where you stand in a door way, brace the club head against the wall and "feel" the correct impact position. This drill has done nothing for me. In addition to drills are there any training aids that could help me with this. Any help would be great. thanks

Re: scooping ball/flipping wrist

I'll offer one of many possible solutions that worked for me as I used to have a similar problem with my hands being too active in the swing. Sometimes it would work if my timing was immaculate but the margin for error was tiny leading to inconsistency. I worked with a pro to eliminate this problem and the key for me was to ensure that my hands were not too close to my body.

This may not be the problem you have but do this simple check next time you address the ball. Once you are in position, measure the distance between the top of the grip and your waist. Make a fist and rest it on your belt buckle, then stick out your thumb. The tip of your thumb should touch the top of the grip.

If you're too close to the ball then don't stretch your arms out, they should still hand pretty much vertically from the shoulders. Bend over a little more from the waits (ensuring you keep your back straight) and stick out your ass for balance until you get the right distance.

I'm 5'10" so the geometry may not be spot on for you but give it a try.
