driver & fairway woods hitting on heel

Can't seem to solve this one. I'm hitting all my shots off the heel of my driver and fairway woods. Distance and direction are fine (though I'm sure I will get more distance once this problem is solved). Driver is TM 200 steel w/S-300 steel shaft @ 43.5". Fairway woods are stiff Bi-Matrix. I've tried to exaggerate the opposite. I can't even purposely hit off the toe! I've lined up with the toe... No help. I've moved the ball up in my stance... No help. I've moved the ball a little farther out from my usual stance... Nothing. Seriously, I don't get it. Heel, heel , heel! Anybody got any words of wisdom on this?

Re: driver & fairway woods hitting on heel

Try standing further away from the ball. If you are hitting it off the heel it could mean that you are too close to the ball and you are coming round from the outside with your swing. It sounds like that especially since you are doing it with the longest clubs. Get someone to look at your setup and make sure there is enough space between your hands and your body at address. There should be at least a six inch gap.

Re: driver & fairway woods hitting on heel

Hi Bythatmuch,

This is something what has plagued me for years, if I hit a bad shot it is always off the heel.

I believe it is caused by letting the upper body go first then trying to re-route on the way down. I was told by my pro that this only happens to a good player capable of getting the club back to the inside having let the upper body go first, having watched it on video I agree, you start with the shoulders down then rush the lower body to catch up, you then hit a good shot but off the heel.

Obviously like me stop rushing from the top and push the lower body first, good advice but it still catches me now and then especially when I'm in trouble and put to much effort in.

Hope this helps

Ian.

Re: driver & fairway woods hitting on heel

Does the ball curve in the air a particlular way or does the flight remain reasonably straight?

Re: driver & fairway woods hitting on heel

Reasonably straight. In my trying to correct it I may get a slight fade or slight pull. When I take my normal swing, mostly straight.

Are you bending at your waist or just bending with your back? I know a lot of people who bend only with their back tend to 'reach' a bit an catch the ball with the heel of their club.

Ian,

Thanks for the lightbulb. Click, click... It works. It's the simple things that sometimes we overlook. Back to basics.

Thanks again

Re: driver & fairway woods hitting on heel

No Worries,

I'm the same every now and then "back to basics".

I hit the ball straight when it happens to me, not much different than a normal shot just not as far.

As I said it's only because your hand eye cordination is very good that you can still make a good contact even with a poor swing.

I have worked all winter on my backswing, working on the correct swing plane, this has helped me to iliminate the problem.

Good Luck

Ian.
