Feeling/Timing the release

Has anyone got any good drills for how to feel and time a good release?

I seem to hit my short irons real well and occasionally my longer clubs but all too often I delay the release. This seems to leave my clubface open, on an inside out path leading to various pushes, slices or hooks depending on whats else is going on. Slices esp with the driver for example. Im wondering if this is because I release a driver at the same point I would say a PW ( as all books etc always tell you to swing these clubs the same)

Im trying to work on a good body turn to start my swing, and then a release. Kind of a one-two count. One is turn, two is release. But I feel sometimes this release is just a swat with the hands so I'd like to know how it should feel, when it should happen and what position my body and the clubhead should be in before this release motion so I can practice it all in slow motion

Ive tried in the past to try and let this release just happen. But it doesnt! So im going to have to force it into my swing until its second nature

Any drills etc greatly appreciated

Re: Feeling/Timing the release

"Release is a power loss". NEVER try to "hold the angle", that violates the laws of physics but instead allow the club to get in line with the left arm and keep the hands moving all the way through Impact to full extension.

Your "path" appears to be fine but trying to hold the angle may be causing the clubface not to rotate properly. For an example, picture Tom Watson's swing. He starts allowing the wrists to uncock almost immediately from the top. Sergio, on the other hand, holds the angle forever. Hummm, let's see - who has won the most tournaments and Majors. Let it happen and keep the hands moving!

Re: Feeling/Timing the release

Sounds like your starting your downswing with your arms? Your hips are the last thing that move in your backswing and the first thing that moves in your release. Try getting a friend to hold the club when you reach the top and check it's your hips releasing first so they clear befor impact. I find that if I concentrate on shifting my bodywieght smoothly and properly from right foot to left foot it helps

Re: Feeling/Timing the release

I wonder if indeed its because i 'hold on' to the club with my longer clubs and try and use my wrists/hands rather than just letting the release happen with loose and relaxed wrists?

in fact im sure this is part of it and would explain why i leave the face open at impact?

i guess hitting lots of half swings to build the trust i need to keep these wrists relaxed is what i need?
