Unhappy Fairway medals

Hello all,

I am new to the forum, and was hoping to get some help on my golf game. I have been working hard on my golf game and have improved on all of my shots except hitting my fairway medals (3 and 5 medal) from the fairway. I just don't get the ball in the air like I do with my high irons (4 and 5, no 3). Can anyone give me a helping hand or some advice for hitting these shots. I'm tired of not getting the benefit of the par 5's or taking a hit on the scorecard on long par 4's. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Fairway medals

Welcome,

Try this:

Treat your Fairway Woods as mid irons (7 iron for example) and hit them the same way. A lot of people try and help the ball into the air with the lower lofted clubs. This often leeds to scooping or thinning/topping. Relax and strike down smoothly on the ball and hopefully you will get better flight on the woods. Use them off the tee for a while as well and it will help you as well just to get used to the length of the club.

Re: Fairway medals

Basically all you need to do is relax and hit your clubs.........for instance:

I cant hit worth a lick with my 3 iron, but i was waiting for a group ahead of me so i looked for burnt balls in the weed rough stubble to hit into the water to buy some time. I just found a ball, dug it up and hit the 3i into the water.

Every single shot i hit carried 200 easy...the last one almost carred the water! The reason i didn't used to be able to hit that club is because i thought i couldn't and tensed up when i had to use it.

Just relax and swing through it.

Re: Fairway medals

I looked at the responses the two of you posted and had to go to the range. As it turned out I slowed my swing down (I was trying to kill the ball) and I also found I was really taking the club too far to the outside on my takeaway. Once I got the feel of where I needed to take the club back and the feeling of the stroke I went back up to normal speed and everything worked great. 3 wood was straight and 220 yards and 5 wood was about 200, not bad condisering I was relying on my 4 iron that I can only hit 175. I guess you were right alot of it was in my head. Thanks for the advice the two of you gave me, hopefully now I'll start to really take some strokes off my game....

May your Drives be long and straight and your Birdies be plentiful....

Re: Fairway medals

I hit my fairway woods pretty good, used to be **** with them, but now I can reach par 5s in two. I used to think I have to speed up my swing with them, but have relized that it's the same swing speed as my 7 iron, from the centre and it's the longer shaft that gets the speed up.

Re: Fairway medals

Ooooo great, a penalty stroke for landing in a water hazard, way to go Tiger.

I think that last post summed up all the egocentric distance obsessed players the world over.

Didnt see any mention of Bonzi going into the hazard on a normal round? Whilst waiting for a group ahead to clear maybe. Nothing wrong with a bit of self praise if you can back it up, which lets face are we ever going to be in a position to question?

Re: Fairway medals

I just love that saying drive for show and putt for doe. Cause that's what I do, drive for show, the more people watching me the better I strike the ball and the further I drive it. I can't putt for **** at the mo so i can't make any money.
