my left hand grip has always been with the shaft resting with the pad of my thumb on top of the shaft and I guess what could be called the heel of the hand at the forward side and rapped round the shaft. the shaft lays directly across the palm diagonally.

should I move the shaft so the heel is on top of the shaft ?

Rest the grip in the last joints of all your fingers. Then wrap all your fingers around except the index and thumb. There can be space between the middle and index finger when you place it. Then place the thumb over to the back side. That is your right hand (left handed golfer)
