i need some help with putting back spin on the ball so i can stop the ball close to the hole anyone with any drills or anything else it would be a big help thank you!

Make sure you are hitting down on the ball. The idea is to 'trap' or 'pinch' the ball between the clubface and the ground. This will impart more spin on the ball and produce a divot after you strike the ball.

Thats how to do it.........


All you need then is clean grooves on you clubs and a premium ball.........PROV1 ETC........



Oh and good clubhead speed at impact off a clean lie, with a clean ball....preferably dry too.

'How far do you hit a 2 iron son?'

'What the hell do you want it to stop for'

You would be better making sure of your distances and then hitting the right club. Backspin is an ego trip thing, like long driving and 1 irons off the turf. I would rather a ball skipped forwards a couple of yards when it lands because you never know when you arent gonna catch the ball just right, that extra five or six feet might make the difference between a makeable birdie putt and a tough two putt par. If you put backspin on a shot that isnt going to make it you are only going to get further away from the hole. Personally, I would guess that I hit more shots a few feet short of pin high than I do a few feet past.

Backspin can be hard to judge. Bear in mind that you need really firm top quality greens for the spin to take effect properly.

Most amatuers who put backspin on their balls can only make the ball stop or check. They do not play on well enough manicured courses, have the right equipment or the right swing speed and mechanics to actually spin the ball back for than a foot.

i tend to only get 4-5 foot of back spin with my wedges when i'm using cheaper balls, when i changed to pro v1 two months ago (my mum decided i'd got good enough to warrant getting some money input so bought me loads) i get about 8-10 foot consistently with sw, lw and pw. i clean my grooves constantly too.

Yes, but my wedge has clean groves, and no spin! is it goin to hi? or to low? and shall i play in forward or back in my stance? less hand action or more?

You need to hit down, and get maximum compression (read: spin). If you're a sweeper (as I was... and still do when I'm lazy) or have a flat swing plane, you have to play runup shots, because your not compressing the ball.
