Many Different Problems

HELP!!!!! I've been playing golf for about 6 years and am around an 18 handicap. Recently I have been having a multitude of problems. With my short irons, I will either shank it, hit behind the ball or top it. Once in a while I will hit a beautiful shot, then the next one could be a shank, top or hit behind. Any suggestions on what I should or can do?? Thank you!!!

Re: Many Different Problems

Get out somewhere just to work on your swing. You need consistency somewhere, focus mentally on swinging the same each time, so you can at least know what your mis hits will do.

Re: Many Different Problems

To add to Bonzia's advice, when working on your swing, don't start with a full swing. Start working on a half swing and work with the 1/2 swing until you have perfected that. Then move to a 3/4 swing and work with that until you have perfected it. Only then start working on your full swing again.

Re: Many Different Problems

Thanks for the info. I went to the range today and realized that I wasn't getting enough turn in my backswing, and that I wasn't shifting my weight on to my back leg. I concentrated on these two things and just let things go and 85% of my shots were great - with all clubs!!!! Thanks for your help

Re: Many Different Problems

I'm no expert but your symtoms are similar those of having too flat a swing plane meaning you're also coming too much from the inside. This tends to get you stuck on your back foot and so makes you ground early - thinning and topping are a result. It can cause shanking too.

With a shorter iron, you need to make sure your clubhead doesn't go inside your hands during the takeaway, stretch your arms up to be level with your shoulder line at the top of the backswing and hit down while moving your weight forward making sure you take a divot.

try hooking the shot on purpase. you will find that you will hit it pretty good. and the you can work round that to get your swing back on track

if that does not work then go back to your old swing and try the pitching shots from 30 yards and when you have no problems with that go back 10 yards and keep doing this untill you get very confidant and your swing is back in top condition again
