Lower Back Problem

I have a recurrence of an old back problem. This injury caused me to give up the game for 11 years. However, I have been able to play, again, for the past 3 years, until 7 weeks ago.

Hopefully, I should be back to playing within the next 2-3 weeks. Can anyone advise whether some change of swing mechanics may reduce the stress that I place on my back?

I tend to hit the ball hard, keeping my upper body well behind the ball at impact. Even though, I am 62 years old, I can still drive over 250 yds, on a regular basis. If a change means losing some distance, then so be it.

Thanks

Re: Lower Back Problem

Thanks Mizuno.

I know that what you are telling me is right, even though it is hard to accept. I don't have many golf prizes or trophies but, of those I do have, the majority are for longest drive.

I suppose I don't want to admit that I'm getting old. I still get a lot of satisfaction from ripping the odd tee shot past the low handicappers, when I get to play with them.

Perhaps a couple of the teaching pros, on the Board, could offer their advice too. I'm sure that they have given instruction to senior golfers, like myself, who have lost the flexibility they once had. (particularly in the lower back).

Re: Lower Back Problem

To keep from losing distance, as your swing slows down, change your shaft flex. If you are hitting your driver 250, you are probably hitting regular flex shafts. If you slow your swing speed down, you can go down to an A flex and keep most of your distance.

As for flexability, ensure you ar doing lots of stretching and resistance training. Don't worry about working with weights, but with therabands. There are many fitness ofr golfers programs out there as well that you might find helpful to help with flexability.

Re: Lower Back Problem

Well, it might sound daft but I do 30 minutes of Tai Chi a day split into 15 minutes in the morning and evening sessions. It envolves continual twisting of the spine while keeping a straight back and because you are usually stepping forwards, backwards, standing on one leg etc, it's very good at promoting your balance - something which is desired in golf. It also helps your tempo ... mine anyway

Re: Lower Back Problem

Hi PG,

Thanks for this piece of advice. I have never considered this. My thoughts, at the moment are more on strengthening the muscles in the pelvic girdle area and/or changing my approach to the swing itself.

I will look into the Tai Chi angle. Incidentally, I'm pleased to say that I have had a couple of anti-inflammatory jabs, this week, and my back is a lot better. If I can get clearance from the osteopath, on Monday, I might get to play in a small senior comp on Wednesday.

Can't wait to get back on the course, especially with the great weather we've been having.

Re: Lower Back Problem

Most likely you are finishing in a reverse C. This is happening because instead of rotating your hips to the target to start the downswing, you are bumping your hips out (sliding laterally) this leaves puts a tremendous amount of stress on your lower back. You are pinching the lower spine. Attempt to finish more vertical by incorporating more rotation.
