Club during swing...floating or powered????

I'm starting to hit my approach shots much more accurately. It seems on these shots, the club head is actually falling through the ball. I don't know if I can properly explain this. The club here is more of a controlled free-fall that is guided vs. hit like striking a base ball.

If this is correct for my short game (approximately 100 +/- yards in) should I be getting the same sensation with my longer irons 5-7 and woods....only using more power to get the club head traveling faster....but still letting if fall through the shot.

Hope this is clear. This just came to me as I was working. I picked up a club and went outside to try something. I let the 5 iron kind of fall as I mentioned above and it felt so sweet. I think I have been gripping too tight and trying to smack the ball with power....thus getting a ball flight that is unpredictable and short.

I can hit around 100 + yards easy with PW without really swinging hard. When trying to hit a 3-7 iron, I think I am making the club part of my arm and trying to smack it vs. letting a floating...falling... action take place and let the release at the bottom work like the PW....only with a faster action.

We've had so much rain here, all the ranges are closed. Can't try it out for another day or two. Does this sound like I am getting on the right track?

Someone once calculated Bobby Jones' acceleration from the top of the swing to impact and found it to be 9.8 meters/second squared... = gravity.

Re: Club during swing...floating or powered????

1 g is not all that powerful.

I re-read my original message. Not very good on explaning my revelation. I think what I am trying to describe is the following (this is how I showed my son).

Take a hair brush. Hold the handle in your hand with a tight grip and hit something. Now, take the handle and hold it with your thumb and another finger. This time, hit down at something but let the hairbrush whip around between your two fingers. This "hinging" effect is what I am experiencing that I never have before.

I live next to a golf course. The driving range was closed because of all the rain we've had. Just to try this out, I asked them if I could just hit a dozen of my old balls. They let me. Took a 5 iron out there and ...man! That was the sweetest I've ever hit a 5 iron. So effortless and so far for so little. Not a pro's distance, by any means. But for me...to hit 12 shots so effortlessly with no chunks, all nice, mid-high, shots....on ****py scrub balls. So excited, I'm taking off work tomorrow to play golf.

I've only been playing for 3 months. Have been shooting a consistent 100. Where I am really off are the shots between the tee and approach (for me, within 125-135 yards). I have been really over-gripping and trying to pound the 140+ yards. Gotta let that club swing free and do the work. I think I'm starting to get that now. hoooooo ya!
