Overswing....

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help me with a drill, i tend to overswing with my woods, occasionally my irons - i am a fairly big hitter but really struggle to stop the overswing, does any one know any drills that can be practiced down the range to try and cut out an overswing,

Any assitance would be gr8

Cheers

James

Re: Overswing....

My only advice would be to take what you feel are half swings.

Oddly enough, since my swing has really come around, I sense two things:

One - my arms are along for the ride. They're completely 'un-energized' once I start my downswing.

Two - my backswing feels ridiculously short. I haven't taken any video of this 'new swing', but I don't feel like I'm going very far back at all.

Re: Overswing....

When your shoulders stop turning ( beyond your chin ), your arms should stop too. Don't let them finish what you think is a full backswing.
Let your head move to the right some inches ( right handed player ) in the beginning of the backswing for not to be in a reverse pivot at the top.
This may help you.

Toni.

Re: Overswing....

Stretching your left thumb in your grip will stop the club from 'dropping' behind your back on the top.

Weird little trick, but it works for me.

Re: Overswing....

one thing you can do is point your target foot (left one if your right handed ) 45 degrees or more towards the target that will keep you from over rotating hips and help with weight shift. second go to back of top swing slowly and stop and hold it for about a 3 count, that will ingrain muscle memory and you will know if your doing a reverse weight shift. i like to do that drill often at top of my swing i bring my left heel up (right handed) a bit to start down swing i work on planting heel to get swing going.hope it helps

Re: Overswing....

There is one drill a golf instructor gave my son which I use once in while. Take the bucket you get your range balls in and put it between your feet. Then hit the ball.

shouldnt your left heel move up on the back swing and back down to start the downswing?
Or is that what you mean

Re: Overswing....

I appreciate all your advice, any drills to help on gaining consistency on the speed of my swing? I have a david leadbetter swing trainor which is pretty good for that but any range tip would be great

Re: Overswing....

This is something ive been working on too and I agree the backswing feels a LOT shorter when youve been used to over swinging

My problem in the past (and it creeps back over time) is excessive rotation of my hips and shoulders. This was made worse when I experimented with the One Plane Swing

What im trying to do is a combination of setting my hips slightly open at address with my right knee pointed slightly inward towards the ball (bowed). Ive then really concentrated on my takeaway just being a move of the shoulders away from my head whilst trying to keeping my hips as still as I can (belt buckle forward). This is different than what I thought a one piece takeaway was but then sometimes excessive opposites are what you want to feel

When done right and the club is parallel to the ground I can feel real tension on my right side. From here I concentrate on not turning the shoulders anymore (for me they're done turning by parallel) but on setting the wrists by cocking them upwards (as in Gregs right hand drill). I almost just put the right hand in the waiter position and thats it

This feels very short but it has stopped my excessive body pivot and built real tension down my right side. It's also helped me stop my tendency to get stuck on the inside coming down as its easier to clear the hips (they have much less far to turn)

It feels much much more compact but it has certainly helped

Re: Overswing....

As an addendum to this, ive also found that by keeping the hips as 'fixed frontal' as I can, the transition of weight from back foot to front foot happens naturally as the backswing completes, led by the weight of the club moving behind and towards the taregt as my wrist cock pulls it nearer to the top. Its at this point I feel really stretched even though there isnt that feeling of as much weight on my right foot as there used to be (I feel more centered at the top of the swing and the arm movement feels much less)

Weird, isn't it? I have exactly the same experience. I have taken video, and yet I still have trouble believing that I'm taking anything near a full swing--but I am. I may not go all the way to the 3 o'clock position with club parallel to the ground, but I get close enough; maybe 2 o'clock. But if I had to go by feel I'd say the club is barely making it to vertical.

Re: Overswing....

Not weird at all, not weird at all. Never trust your feeling in golf. Trust the video!

I have exactly the same problem. What feels like a full swing is actually an overswing. What feels like a 3/4 swing is actually a full swing. Took some videos, got it analyze, made some adjustments (I felt so), took some more videos, not much adjustment made!

Exaggerate exaggerate exaggerate. You will get there when you exaggerate
