Pushing the ball off the ground

I've recently started playing golf and have been practicing a lot at the range.

When I hit the ball off a tee peg I have no problem - it's a clean hit and 90% of shots go long and straight.

However, when I try to hit the ball off the ground it all goes wrong. The majority of my shots fly off to the right immediately.

I've been told that I'm leaving the face open at impact. My questions are:-

1) Why does this not happen when hit off the tee?
2) What can I do to correct it?
