Rotation

Hey golfers
I have just recently had a lesson where I was taught to rotate the hips instead of sliding them to start the downswing. I am having alot of trouble doing this correctly.
I feel I am able too rotate but each time I seem to be hitting it chunky or right. Im thinking that my grip could be to strong, hence causing scoopy shots.
Is there any drills out there to help begin the downswing properly? I have been taught one where the club comes from your belt and you rotate back and fourth and also the buttocks agaist the seat, where you go right cheek left cheek to ensure proper rotation.
I feel that my hips arent open at impact, maybe causing the great power loss. It seems that even when I do swing it properly like the pro was sayng there is not really any improvement.

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers All the way from South Australia

Re: Rotation

scooping shots generally means there is a breakdown in the left wrist. Left wrist should be straight at impact. working with an impact bag may help. also check greg willis impact drill and look at the left wirst.

Re: Rotation

I'll do my best to help here, but there are others who are no doubt more qualified.

First, my golf instructor also wants me to lead the downswing with a rotation of the hips. This is the method favored by Ben Hogan (see "The Modern Fundamentals of Golf"). This has been troubling for me too. I did find what I think is the missing link in David Leadbetter's DVD, "From Beginner to Winner".

Leadbetter also teaches his pupils to rotate their hips at the beginning of the downswing, but shows that this is accompanied by a weightshift from the backleg to the forward leg. In the video it looks like a little "pushoff" that leads to the hip rotation. I haven't had a chance to try this at the range yet, but it looks promising to me.

As for drills, I believe he recommends a half swing to build tempo and to ingrain the weight shift sequence. I'll look at the video again and repost if I've not got the drill correct.

Hope this helps.

Jim

Merry Christmas

Re: Rotation

Just food for thought but I believe you have to a slight lateral bump first before rotation. If you just simply rotate will you not come over the top? Think about it. If you just stand up without a club and go the top of the swing first rotate the hips and watch your hands, then bump laterally and then rotate and see if you can see the diference.

Re: Rotation

Cheers for the help.
I understand about the bump so that your weight shifts forward for a descending approach. Ill speak to my coach about it.
Also Im thinking at this stage that if your grip is too strong then you will try to drop it on the inside, producing fat and hooked shots. I've tried weakening my grip and seem to hit it a bit cleaner. Is this true?

Have a good Christmas + thanx for the help
