Shots going right

The past couple of weeks, most of my shots seem to be going right. They start straight and then curve right (fade).

I'm pretty sure that I'm not coming over the top, and from what I can tell the club face is straight at impact - what else can I check?

Thanks!

Re: Shots going right

Yeah, I'm just going back over old posts to see what others have said..

I am wondering if I'm just too tense and gripping too hard. I'm going to the range later, so I'll experiment a bit.

Re: Shots going right

I know for me personally when I've been hitting the ball well, then I'm trying to outdrive my buddies, I usually get a ball that goes straight, then makes a right turn. For me, it's completely due to choking the club open (grip pressure WAY to tight). So, yardage-wise, I may win, but a ball that goes 100 yards out and 250 yards right is tough to play a second shot with.

Re: Shots going right

Just got back from the range... I think it's a combination of a lot of things, but mainly I think it's to do with a poor backswing.

When I focussed on drawing the club back in a straight line and continuing all the way to the top, I was hitting a lot straighter when I concentrated on bringing the club back down the same path and in a straight line through the ball.

Using Greg's right-hand drill too helped keep the club face at the right angle at impact.

Whenever a slice creeps into my play, I concentrate on 3 things:

relaxing, weight shift and using around 70% power ... usually works for me.

Re: Shots going right

It does appear that I am also rolling my wrists through impact so the club face is open. Are there any tips to make sure I keep them straight?

Re: Shots going right

You're grip pressure is far too tight.

I would also bet that you are sliding your hips to initiate the downswing.

Check your grip, the V'S formed by your index finger and thumb should point between your chin and right shoulder.

Re: Shots going right

Not only is your grip pressure probably too tight but look at your transition and make sure your hands and wrists are soft coming from the top of the backswing. Most probably you are jerking the downswing. Just relax and let the downswing happen as a natural result of the backswing and uncoil.
I sense you need to start the backswing also with a few easy waggles to accentuate soft hands and wrists. I like the club to feel free and easy before I take the backswing.
Also, stay in your shot and don't lift up or out of it; pointing the butt of the club more down the line before impact will help you stay down and through.

Re: Shots going right

maybe you are lunging at the ball with your upper body, you need to get yourself on tape

Re: Shots going right

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm pretty sure I'm not lunging at the ball with my upper body or sliding my hips though.

I'm going to the range again tomorrow, so I'll work on relaxing my hands and wrists and make sure I have a smooth transition to the downswing.

One way of doing this is trying a build a pause into your transition. Sense the backswing come to a stop before you start the downswing. I have a recurring tempo problem where i get too quick on the transition and lunge into the downswing. I never hit the ball well from there. If i force myself to count a pause at the top I hit the ball SO much better its untrue. This of course is becuase you are giving your body the time to set itself to change direction. If you could see yourself video's with this 'pause' it would seem impercebitle but thats one of the reasons why pro's swings look so smooth as opposed to jerky as they have a good slow transition

Count One-Two-Three as you swing and make sure you hold the 'two' before starting down. Do this with all your shots even the short game

Re: Shots going right

Thanks for the tip - I'll definately give that a try tomorrow!

One last thing I wonder is contributing to my slice is my distance from the ball. I wonder if I've been too far away from the ball. Is there an easy way to make sure I'm at the correct distance?
