Top of Swing

At the top of my backswing I tend to have my hands too close to my left shoulder (I play left-handed) whereas it is supposed to be between your shoulder and head. What is the most important part of getting that right ie. setup, wrist break, shoulder turn? And how can we practice that?

Re: Top of Swing

Hi Steven,

There are two thing which will cause this, either you don't turn your shoulders 90 degrees and simply lift your arms, or your right arm is bent far to much.

A simple swing thought is to keep the hands as far away from the head all through the swing, try some half swings with the right arm straight but not tense, making sure you start the swing with your right shoulder.

Hope this helps.

Ian.

Re: Top of Swing

So Ian, the start of the back swing should be with the left shoulder (for r/h) rather than the arms taking the club away

Re: Top of Swing

Hi Nicola,

Yes this is correct you should start the swing with the left shoulder, taking the arms with your shoulder in unison, by starting the swing with the arms only you immeadiatly drift to the inside.

Hope this helps to explain your query.

Ian.

Re: Top of Swing

Cheers Ian,

The left shoulder turns and finishes over the right foot? If done efficiently, would it stop hip sway and loop at top of back swing?

Nicole.

Re: Top of Swing

Hi Nicole,

I would work on turning the left shoulder under your chin, instead of your feet this is just used for explaining shoulder turn and weight shift.

Once your shoulder is under your chin make sure you seperate them again on the downswing, in effect you only have six inches to think about.....under chin..........leaving chin.

As for your sway etc, when you start the swing try to keep the hips absolutely still...........this is of course impossible....test it take your back swing and keep them dead still, when you look down they will have moved around 45 degrees 'perfect'.

Hope this helps.

P.s the loop......??????
