HELP: Sliding not turning!!!

Hello to all!!! I have a question that some of you may be able to help me with. I have a two-plane sort of upright swing (hands wind up slightly over my right shoulder on the backswing with a flat left wrist) for many years now(very similar to David Toms) and just recently I have been hitting many Block Slices. I believe it is due to the fact that I am sliding through impact as opposed to turning my hips. Anyone have any good drills that can help me turn instead of slide. I find that if I consciously try to turn my hips on the downswing I turn my shoulders instead and come over the top.

Re: HELP: Sliding not turning!!!

Dear gmazz...

Last summer I had one of the worst attacks of "Push-Slice" you would ever see. It sounds like that is what you are really talking about. I went to three instructors and never really was able to isolate a "smoking gun".

I like you thought I was sliding but not rotating. I was forced to figure it out myself. I knew that if you try the drill where you put both legs together and hit balls, it virtually eliminates any possible way of sliding. Guess what, I could still hit that ugly "Push-slice".

After that, and in retrospect, I have come to the conclusion that most of the time it happens it is because I am gripping the club too tight and blocking the shot with the wrists. Also, making an complete shoulder turn and maintaining the "angle" in your wrists makes a much better swing pattern. Look in this direction to cure your problems. Try Greg Willis's "Right Hand Drill".

First though, get on the range. Try hitting some balls with your feet right together and see if you are still hitting the bad shots. This should give you some feedback as to whether you are really sliding or instead you are blocking the shots. If you are blocking, try really loosening you grip up and maintaining the angle in your right hand through impact. The only way to really hit these shots is coming through impact with an open clubface and probably inside out.

Good luck.

Re: HELP: Sliding not turning!!!

I've got a table drill around here somewhere.

You can do it with a table, or a tree, or an old shaft or stick or umbrella stuck in the ground.

Anyway, here it is:

You stand with your hip 1" (2 cm) from the table/umbrella/shaft. If you have a pair, then you can put one on either side of you, again, 1" from your hips.

Make your swing, and don't touch the sticks/tables/umbrellas. This will force you to coil.
