Question Fat With 3&4 Irons

Hello..

More often than not when I'm faced with a long iron shot, I'm hitting behind the ball. Strangely enough, this doesn't happen with the 5I-PW. I've tried choking down on these irons, and shortening the backswing, but those results are worse than the "fat" hit. It's frustrating not being able to hit the 160-180 yard par 3's Help!!

Re: Fat With 3&4 Irons

Hi, i sufferd from the same problem for a while and know how annoying it can be to hit the long irions fat, mainly after a great tee shot . What my problem was is that i would have a tendancy to bend my left arm at the elbow at the top of my swing which made me hit fat as the club approched the ball on the down swing. I then started to maintain a fairly stright left arm on the back swing ( with the exception of a very slight flex), this helped me to pick the ball clean, or at worst take a very shallow diviot after the ball was struck.

This little move works great at trimming the fat , but you have to make sure that on the down swing you start with your hips unwinding while relaxing your arms and letting them drop, if you dont the club wont realease back to square and say hello to a well clean connected slice or BIG PUSH, Hope this helps u and please let me know if it works out.

Re: Fat With 3&4 Irons

Me too have problem with long irons and I overcome it with extra practice.

Hit 1000 balls with each iron until you reach iron 3.

I've been practising this way from iron 6. Today I just hit the 300th balls using my iron 4.

It's not easy but you'll learn something from it.

- don not cock hearly, let it hinged on the top of the back swing
- don't use wider stance, smallaer stance for easier bodt turning
- i adress the ball in the middle of the stance
- swing as fast as you can like swinging iron 9

Dedicate 100 balls for each day just for long iron. The first 10-20 balls will be ugle, but after you get the rhythm and the sweat...you'll swing in rhtym and will probably strike the ball properly.

At this time I will not pay attention of ball flight. Like Bubba Watson scenario, his dad trained him to strike ball properly first and then will correct the ball direction.

Just think a big round arch.....

Re: Fat With 3&4 Irons

I've replaced my 3 and 4 irons with a 7 wood and 4 iron-wood hybrid. I make more consistent contact with these than with the longer irons.
