Hitting 3 wood off the fairway

I love my three wood (TM 200 series 15 degree) hit it pretty good off the tee, 230 yds. But can not hit it off the deck. Can anyone give me any suggestions. When I am at the driving range on the mats no problem but when I go to the grass area I do what I always do which is top the ball.
I am thinking about buying the Ping G5 Hybrid but there is nothing like hitting a three wood flush (which I have done but not often enough).
Thanks

I use a hybrid and love it. I feel like it gets "down and through" the ball better.

Re: Hitting 3 wood off the fairway

Hi dant, I'm not really sure how it would be different. If it's not a mental thing then it's probably the elevation. Might be a bit subtle that you don't even notice it, but do look out for it the next time you play

Dant,

Check your lie - this would be a consideration. This will determine your set up. When using woods off the deck, I've worked hard on not trying to rip them.

Re: Hitting 3 wood off the fairway

Hi

I suffer from this too! My mates tell me not to be afraid of the shot and just hit it like an iron - easier said than done though. I definitely think the problem is mental combined with the fact that ( on my home course ) I only need to hit it twice on an average round so I hardly have a chance to get used to playing it.

Good Luck!!!

Re: Hitting 3 wood off the fairway

Using a fairway wood off the tee and off of the deck require a slightly different swing. In order to hit it well off the deck you need to hit down on it more than off the tee. The tendency for some is to try and lift the ball with their woods off of the deck. Try hitting down on it more and you should get better results.

Re: Hitting 3 wood off the fairway

So is it just a matter of placing the ball further back in your stance if you are on the fairway, as opposed to further in front if you are hitting it off a tee?

Re: Hitting 3 wood off the fairway

Simon

I wouldn't shift the ball too far back as that will have the effect of delofting the club making it harder to get the ball airborne. Just a little bit is OK. As a previous member said - try not to scoop at the ball.

Re: Hitting 3 wood off the fairway

It could be a mental thing brought on by using the mats. Try finding a range that lets you hit from the grass and practice taking thin, proper divots with your 3 wood.

Re: Hitting 3 wood off the fairway

Basic question. How should your swing differ between hitting a 3 wood off the tee or on the fairway? Definitely the ball will be higher on the tee. Do you sweep up off the tee and hit down on the fairway? I use a 4 wood and I find I hit it best when teed just half an inch. How high should I tee it up on the course actually?

Anything hit off the tee should be no more than half an inch except for the driver.. also you should sweep both off the tee and off the fairway if you want a clean and crisp shot. My best five woods go about 200mtrs off the tee and off the ground... not bad aye

I wish I could help you, but I have a similar problem. I even changed 3-woods - I now have a Ben Hogan C455 that has a more rounded sole and slightly higher face than my old Tight-Lies type 3-wood.

My bad shots are either thin or low cuts. When I do hit it, it goes well, but I can't rely on it. I hit it if there is no trouble and hope for the best. If there is trouble and I need to be more accurate, I use my 19 deg hybrid (PowerPlay5000 with Irod shaft) which replaced my 5-wood. This club is quite easy to hit and will get me 200-220 yds. I hit it off the tee on tight par 4s and long par 3s. I am planning on replacing all irons down to 5 with hybrids - just much easier to hit and high trajectory helps ball stay on green.

But, I must persever with the 3-wood if I hpe to reach any of the par-5s in two!

Re: Hitting 3 wood off the fairway

use same swing, jut put the ball about one ball width back, MAYBE 1 1/2 but go with one first.

Re: Hitting 3 wood off the fairway

Thanks for all of the responses. When you guys say place the ball back in your stance how far back our we talking about. I am begining to think it might be all in my head. I also think that I am swining to hard because I want the ball to get there that I am pulling myself out of my swing thus topping the ball. What has helped in the past is to imagine someone with there hand on my back appling some slight pressure. We will have to see still a little cold yet to find out.

Re: Hitting 3 wood off the fairway

1 to 1 1\2 balls inside of where you hit it from off a tee
