Latest Lesson

Hi Guys and girls

I had a lesson last week and my pro has given me a lot of confidence in my swing for the new season ahead, here are a couple of stills of me and Langer who is a similar height and build as me, please feel free to comment on any part of my swing, either good or bad.

Ian.

Re: Latest Lesson

Get your hips and shoulders through more! Your left hip slid forward instead of turning. Work on the Impact/Wall Drill, this will take care of this in a day.

Re: Latest Lesson

Thanks Greg,
Spoken like a true pro, this is the only thing I was told to work on, turning through quicker, he had me take my Right foot back and hit a few to get the feeling.

I suspect it is because I have been working on keeping my right hip inside the lines on the backswing as in the pic of me and Langer, I have wrote to Bernard about his overswing.........lol

Cheers

Ian.

Re: Latest Lesson

Very Funny Shooting4par,

I work alot on the mental side, personally it helps me more than anything else, seperating practice from playing is one of the most difficult things to achieve because one bad shot and we simply start analizing our swing and of course this leads to more mistakes etc.

The thing is once you fix something in your swing or my swing as the case maybe something else goes and furthermore what is more annoying is it can be the same thing I have worked on before, I have always been a little slow through the ball and it haunts me, I have been working on retaining my right hip in the backswing and now not rotating it enough going through......agrrrrrr

However it's not all bad a very easy cure available and I will be back on track, but being a steady player I don't make many mistakes.

Cheers

Ian.

Re: Latest Lesson

Greg

Every time I try that impact drill it all feels good, but when I try and replicate the feeling with a longer swing, I always leave the face wide open and block right

To get there I feel like I drive the right shoulder down the plane and my hips and arm angles seem ok, just the clubface is pointing way right

any ideas?

Re: Latest Lesson

Hi Paul,

I have the same affect, a push, I think if you force it you then slide your hips even more.
I respect Greg's opinion as we have been on GTO long enough to know each other well and I cannot ignore the evidence of Gregs pictures, I have surfed though loads of pro swing today and not all pro have this prounounced hip turn, Hogan, Woods, Toms certainly do however there are many who do not, although thoses who do not are a little further than me. When I look at another swing of mine when I was hitting the ball harder I was further through at impact. Armed with this I will try a little of both...............a touch quicker through impact and a bit better clearing of the hips.

One thing we must all remember " 99% of us will never achieve a pro swing that is perfect" but it is always good to see what other experianced golfers think to give yourself ideas.

Re: Latest Lesson

Tks Ian

Yeah, I think trying to get into that position I slide the hips rather than rotating. If I do this move without a club and feel like its my right hip thats the 'driver' then i get into this position much easier, its just with a club it 'feels' like an OTT move and my internal computer subconcious makes some sort of compensation for it (I wish I could turn it off sometimes )

I think it probably boils down to mental thing as you say of trusting being that open at impact without the fear of hitting it way left. Like you when Im hitting it really well i almost feel like im going to whack it left but its a trust issue with my brain !

I only wish Greg had a drill for getting from the top to that impact position .. perhaps those who do this with ease can enlighten me on how they 'feel' they move the core to get there? I suspect as I say its rotation rather than a lateral move. Maybe I need to play with a plank of wood in my left hip pocket

Doing drills isolates one aspect of the swing. Taking a drill to a full swing needs to still have all the other elements of the full swing working correctly as well. Doing "just" the impact drill alone does not square the face. You have to have the hands release completly *down*. The "right hand drill" isolates that part. Combine them and you now have the right position of the body AND hands.

Re: Latest Lesson

Thanks Greg,

I will be at the range in about an hour for another training session, do you think just a bit more speed as well as hip clearing or did you think the speed was fine?.

Ian.

Hard to tell what the speed is in those low-qual videos. Make sure the "Sport Mode" is on for the camara...most have them. Just about doubles the camara speed and allows frame-by-frame positions to be clear.

Once you get that clear video, you can take the distance of the club head from each frame starting from the top, and calcualte/see the delta...you should see the distance increase at each frame. If you see the distance stay the same, or worse, shorten before impact, you decelrated...bad!

Re: Latest Lesson

Thanks Greg, one more question. If you look at the impact positions of the some of the long hitters here

http://www.golfdigest.com/instructio...essimpact.html

You can see how a lot of them are in the impact position, but seem to have a significant spinal tilt away from the target meaning the shoulders are right on the plane line at impact. Again is that a natural consequence of the rotation from the top caused by the spine angle tilt set at address?

As always I will take your advice to my next practice session. Im going to work on feeling like I start the transition with my right hip rather than my left and feeling the right hand cock down into impact. Think i'll do this all slowly at first !

OK, sorry Greg! .. wrt to the previous message do you see any danger in using a right hip turn to force the hips to rotate from the top? If I feel like I lead with the left I'm always fighting that slide and struggling to get into that impact position

Re: Latest Lesson

Sure, as log as the right side by itsself is not pushing. The left also pulls, and you want to do both to make a good powerful rotation...its that "combo" thing that makes a good move "easy". Otherwise you will always be fighting forces, and that's bad.
