This has caused me a great deal of confusion. I thought the only way your wrist should ever cock was up and down (I think Greg talks about this in the right hand drill). If one "cups" his right wrist, is that not a sideways cocking (slapping) movement? How do you cup your right wrist without a like move by your left wrist? I know this may be very elementary, and I ask your forgiveness for my stupidity.

Re: Greg Norman's, "The Secret"

hyper,
In the golf swing the main function of the left wrist is to cock and uncock, the right wrist cups which will keep the left wrist flat at impact

at address the left wrist, for a lot of people but not all, is a little cupped. At the start of the back swing the right wrist cupping back is the first active move of the hands/wrist. This will flatten the left wrist. THEN the rear elbow folds while left wrist cocks, this cocking action of the left wrst may cock the right a little but if we cock the right wrst before cupping, it makes it harder to get cupped and stay that way through impact.

Re: Greg Norman's, "The Secret"

By the way, here's a close up of Beem's hands. I've seen that most the pros have same approach.

1. The first shows how most pros radically extended their right hand downward. I've read boatloads of books with their section on "the grip" but most of them really don't show how radically the pros cock their right hand.

2. The rest of the pictures just really illustrate how Beem immediate cocks his wrist at take-away. He hold this through impact. This is not unique to Beem.

Re: Greg Norman's, "The Secret"

Here 2 more where I have replaced the bottom two squares with

Lower Left: Hands face on at set up

Lower Right: Hands, face on, at impact

Note: There is no cock at setup, although you can see above that he quickly sets the cock.

The Answer is a Leadbetter swing aid - looks like it advertises the same function as the Secret.

I am very curious to try one of them, especially for $10 on eBay. Two questions:

Has anyone tried the Answer (to compare it to the Secret)?

Why were these both discontinued if they work and are tons cheaper than all the swing aids on the market now?

Re: Greg Norman's, "The Secret"

Theo, you need to understand that is not wrist cock but wrist CUP and your pictures greatly illistrate what I have been trying to tell hyper, so thanks for helping me to illustrate my point to him. Also, THe reason they set up that way is so the right wrist CUPS first in the back swing, among other reasons.

Hyper, did those pictures clear up what I am trying to convey to you?

WOW this could be revolutionary. Please stay with me on this, cause I have thought for some time that my wrist action was the loss of a lot of my potential power. The way I understand it is: At address, most of us have a slight cup in our left wrist (right handed golfer). By cupping the right wrist on the backswing, we TAKE this CUP out of the left wrist and flattten it. The goal is to maintain that position thru impact, thereby allowing me to hit my 7 iron 150 yards, rather than the 125 that I now hit it. Am I close to understanding it.

Also, the Pictures in this post of Beem,, show a pronounced downward "Cocking if you will" of the right wrist at address. what is the purpose of this, or is this a product of his strong grip?

I want to be very sure that I understand this. Is Beem "Immediately COCKING both wrist", or is he immediately just CUPPING his right wrist in order to flatten the left?.

you got it, this will flatten the left wrist.

it is called uncocking, the objective of this is for a variety of reasons. One it produces more of a straight line between club shaft and right fore arm.
2. Puts right wrist in a position to cup first on the back swing
3. Helps hit ball in center of club because of less angle, meaning the relationship between club shaft and right fore arm, being released at impact.
4.. Aids in not lifting up into impact, strong relation to number 1, 3.
5. Adds power because it puts right heal pad behind the shaft
6. Keeps plain more consistent
7. it helps aide you from taking the club back to the inside too quickly because instead of rolling the forearms over in the backswing the first move will be cupping of the right wrist

8. that is just for starters

As you can see there is a lot to just this ONE position but most people do not pay attention to set up, it is the red headed step child of the golf swing. What goes on it the golf swing can be very complicated or pretty simple. If everybody on these forums set up correctly there would be a lot less discussion on this forum because they would all be better golfers, the swing would happen more automatic, and they would be much more consistent

BTW hyper, for you it will be revolutionary because it seems like you get it.

immediately he CUPS the right wrist which in chipping is all you do, in chipping you want no wrist cock. go out and try that

The order is CUP then cock

Thanks so much. I am going to work on this at the range, darn it's raining now, and I will let you know the results. Hum --- cup then cock. I really never knew that before. I have been trying to cock both wrist.

Cup and cock are often used interchangably.

I perfer dorsal flexion if we want to be exact about pulling one hands toward the back of ones hand.

Radial flexion is flexing your wrists in the direction of ones thumb.0

I still get the extra credit for the pictures.

they should not be used interchangably because they are not close to the same thing ESPECIALLY when you are giving advice on a forum like this because people who are looking for info will become confused and it can be a detriment to their progress. The concept of cup and cock are pretty basic, lets not confuse them on the basics
