Firm left wrist at impact

After much trial and mostly error, I had almost concluded that I will never hit my irons again (6-lw) with a full swing. My driver, fairway woods, and hybrids (4i and 5i) perform fairly well, but my irons have gone beserk--topping, wicked slices, smothered pulls. If it could be bad, it would be very bad. It didn't use to be that way, but it is now.

Anyway, I played a round on Tuesday, taking full swings with only woods and hybrids, using my irons for varying pitches and chips. Not fun. I noticed on a drive late in the round, though, what may be my problem with my irons. It seemed as though my left wrist had broken forward and I smothered my drive.

I think my whole problem comes down to the left wrist. If I allow the clubhead to outrace my hands, my left wrist breaks and any hope of decent contact goes with it. I think I get away with it with my woods and hybrids, but it bites me with the irons.

All of this recounting just to ask the following:

1. Does this make sense--that is, that failing to have a firm left wrist at impact is the cause of my contact issues?

2. How do you keep your left wrist firm?

Many thanks,
Bill

This is what helps me

http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/v...44&postcount=8 (Divot Behind the Ball)

I treat my mid irons down (i.e 6-PW) as a different swing to my long clubs. One is a real punch down and through whilst the other is a longer sweeping swing

You may be on to something. I remember that when I used to make good contact with my irons, I often came down too steeply with my driver, causing popups. I'll give it a try this afternoon.

Still, does your method of swinging your 6-pw help to create the firm left wrist, or am I wrong that this may be part of my malady?

Re: Firm left wrist at impact

Well it does for me. I almost feel as if im hitting the ball with the back of my left wrist. Note I said hit. Im starting to like the 'feeling' that I hit/punch the ball with my shorter irons and sweep/swing through with the longer ones/woods.. get some backspin this way too

Let me know how you get on when you try it later

Re: Firm left wrist at impact

Oh well--I gave it a go and couldn't get the knack of it. Funny thing, though, is that a couple of weeks ago I was experimenting with a super-reduced back swing, a la Allen Doyle, and was hitting everything great. Thanks, anyway, for your help. I may end up finding a set of 6-pw hybrids.
