Re: Effortless Power

aslo accelerating through the swing...... do not try to hit the ball from the top, swing slow from the top and accelarate and swing through the ball. It doesn't matter if your swing speed reaches 110 if you can't maintain that speed untill contact with the ball and you decrease it to 80 at contact. accelerating through contact will not only give you distance, but more accuracy.

Re: Effortless Power

Tempo, timming, and balance. With out one, or more of those three items, you won't be able achieve your maximum, controlled swing speed, weight shift, hip turn, or proper release during your swing. This is just my own personal opinion on the subject. GJS

One of the key components I think is the mental breakthrough all good players make at some point in their golf journey where they learn (and trust) that you swing easier to make the ball go further

By easier I mean with less tension, a lighter grip and a smooth acceleratrion into the ball. All these things breed better timing and balance rather than the standard lash at the ball with the death grip

Id encourage all high handicappers to beg, borrow or steal one of those radar swing speed guns. When you visually see that your swing speed is 10-20mph faster with a smooth/syrupy swing your brain/subconcious actually starts to believe it

Re: Effortless Power

I have been playin this game for some years now, and I have learnt that if I want distance I really have to slow everythink down in order for the correct syncronized timing to happen. And with that you get the bonus of more accuracy, it takes a long time to learn to trust your swing.
But when you do be ready to see your handicap come down, mine came from 14 to 8 in 1 year and has remained for the last 3 years.

Re: Effortless Power

Very good point Paul. Whenever I make a "breakthrough" in my swing, I realise that I always go back in the next session gripping harder and trying to swing harder, only to bring me back to the level before the breakthrough!

My 7i has gone from 130-140 back to 120yds and I still have not found out how to get back to 130-140

Simon, when you next practice make your main swing thought loose wrists. Your wrists need to be a free hinge between the club and your arms for maximum clubhead speed. When I say soft wrists, I mean really, really loose and floppy so you kind of feel the weight of your hands. IMO, you can't have your wrists too soft AND the softer the better.

If you do this, they will hinge perfectly on the way back and you will keep the lag in the downsing longer than you ever have. Its a weird feeling, like giving up control of the clubhead ,but thats exactly what you want. Try shaking out your arms before you swing to feel what a loose wrist should be and then keep that feeling as you swing

Try videoing a few swings like this head on and see the hinge and lag you get. When you see it (visually) it helps your brain realise its the right way to go. This will also help your overswing since your club will reach the top far quicker with a faster/easier hinge

Re: Effortless Power

I have a very bizarre feeling right now. It's like I know exactly what you are saying and I know that I know that info, yet when I think back to my last 10 practice sessions say, there were probably 2 sessions where I had the loose wrists and those were my 130-140yds shots, and then I think about the other 8 sessions and I was trying to swing hard and hit hard, the wrists were super tensed, and those were the 120yds sessions

I think a stumbling block for me at this point is that I am trying very hard to get the straight left wrist and cupped right wrist at the top of my swing. In order to do that (at least for now), I have to really tense up and cup my right wrist all the way. Keeping them loose will probably end up with those extra 4 frames of left wrist cup at the top

Re: Effortless Power

Its really hard Simon, I know!

But when you get there it will be the breakthrough you are looking for distance wise

This post from Neil is IMO a hall of fame GTO post

http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/v...86&postcount=6 (6 iron=150yds/driver=150yds help!)

A great example is Vijay. His wrists and hands are so relaxed at impact that his right wrist is nearly coming off the club!

I dont agree with this mate. IMHO that wrist collapse at the top is your brain striving to swing further back in an attempt to hit the ball further. You need to prove to yourself and train yourself mentally (this is really important and guys like Ian can help here) that power comes from a loose and relaxed swing You say in your post that you already know this from how youve practiced. I think if you just stay in your posture, get setup right (with a good grip and wrist position), let your backswing happen (with soft hands/loose wrists/shoulder turn etc), work hard on not collapsing it at the top (by stopping at a 3/4 position) and then swing through really relaxed it will start to fall into place. And work on this .. dont expect instant success but it will click .. it does for all good golfers at some point .. again why Neils post would have been such a catharsis for him in his 'journey'

Have a go next time at the range and keep saying to yourself- short backswing, loose wrists, short backswing , loose wrists
