My Project

ok, well my brother has got out of jail, he was on drugs pretty bad, just pretty darn dumb, so he needs something to occupy his time so me and my dad introduced him to golf

he went with us tuesday(when i shot the 41, previous entry), he had fun, but he has alot of flaws, way far out flying elbow, no wrist cock, falls backwards on swings, couldnt touch the ball with the driver hardly, lifts up bad, straightens right knee

ive tought my dad in the last 4 months how to play golf, he shoots mid 80s, i tought my cousin how to play golf in the last 3 months, he now shoots mid 80s, but none of them started off this bad

my goal is to have him shooting in the mid 80s by next month(6/10/06)

we will be playing 1 to 2 times a week, maybe more maybe less, but i have a plethora of training aids and drills to help

i will use this journal to mostly talk about our process and drills i get him to do, i will also take comments on suggestion to fix some of his flaws posted earlier

ok so his first nine: shot a 57...a very generous 57, most of the time he took his drive and dropped it with ours in the middle of the fairway,
he hit a few irons shots decent, bad scooper though
one fairway wood shot about 200 yards,
putted surprisingly ok,
chipped...scooper, so bad

today, i showed him the correct posture, setup, grip, and wrist cocking, weight shift and hip movent, i had him swing a metal rod, until he got tired

swing visually improved a bunch

thats it for now, we will be playing friday, so thats the next update

Re: My Project

thats good, fundementals are extremely important. keep it up. my only advice (not knowing his situation or how good you are) that I wish someone told me when I first started, is be keep your arms and hand as RELAXED as posible throught out the whole swing. dont even swing harder as you get closer to the ball as an attemp to "accerlate" at impact (which is a good thing). but when you try to accerate you will tighen up and loose so much power. As a man, I know it to be extrememly hard, but for some reason we think to hit it far we have to hit it hard. I have never hit better in my life untill finding this out. the more relaxed you are the looser the hinge ( hands) will be and the greater lag and power you will get. not only does it give you a lot more distance, but it also promotes a more natural downswing which gives you great accuracy.

Re: My Project

You brother is fortunate to have someone take such an interest in him. May God prosper your efforts.

BTW, when you get him in the mid-80's, come to SC and work with me! Sounds like you've had some real success.

Re: My Project

thanks alot broadus, ill come to SC but you might have to pay the travel fees, thats it, lessons are free, well you can pay for me a round at your fav course wink wink

i worked with him today a little while we were at work, i got his swing "looking" as good as anybodys, no lifting is the big thing

he can hit metal "slugs"(pieces of metal about half the size of a golf ball) with a metal rod thats about the length of a 5 wood off the ground everytime(we work at my dad's metal shop)

tomorrow is his first time out after my instruction, hope he can keep it up
