Appreciate any feedback on swing problems

I retired and have decided to try to improve at golf. I have ALWAYS had an outside-in swing, but used to hit the ball an average distance. I have never been consistent with my irons, and never had a lesson previous to retiring. After taking some lessons recently and hitting at least three thousand practice balls I have become a bit more consistent, but still not as consistent as I want to become. I also do not get much distance. Maybe 220 yards with a driver and 140 yards with a 6 iron. I am very frustrated with what I see as a lack of progress. ( I have Ping G5s with the stock graphite shaft. )

Does the following "improvement" plan make sense? Any other suggestions? I do spend quite a bit of time reading the posts on this site so I know these issues get discussed a lot, but I'm hoping for a suggestion that works for me that I haven't tried.

1. Continue to use the "inside approach" and try to strike the ball inside of the centerline per TeachingPro's (Kelrosa) advice. I tried the suggestion where I don't look at the ball and just concentrate on keeping the club on plane, but that was not a miracle cure for me. Does anyone have some sort of physical key to use to make certain I swing on the proper plane? I have tried elbow in, etc, etc, but just can't seem to get a key to follow to ensure that I don't swing outside in.

2. Try Greg's "right hand drill" to try to get some additional distance and consistency.

One thing I have noted about my swing, that I have a bit of trouble trying to sort out, is this. When I take a 6 iron ( or any iron ) back until it is just parallel with the ground and start my swing from there I get the same, or more distance, and more accuracy than when I take a full swing. I am wondering if this means that I am not following Greg's "right hand drill" and will see if that fixes anything tomorrow.

I can only tell you a couple of things that have helped with my consistency.
1) Increase my spine angle at address and keep it there throughout the swing until the end.
2) To promote a smooth takeaway and maintain body arm connection, put a headcover under my left arm and swing with it. Should only come out a the very end of the swing.

Does "increase spine angle" mean to just bend over more?

you retired so I'm guessing your no spring chicken any more lol no pun inteded, your yardages are just fine, check out the average players there all right there, dont worry about the distance work on the ball striking, stay loose and relaxed and practise when the ball striking gets good the distance will fallow.

yes from the hips, no stooping. Put a club across your hip line and lean foward, knees slightly flex and buttocks extended over the heels.
