Re: how to chip

Hey Shootin

V good advice (like most all of your advice! ). I think I was getting this cupping sensation in my full iron shots, but after trying your chipping drill it has improved all my ball striking. Have another post there where my pro was getting me to sync my body and arms and with your chippin with a cupped right wrist my ball striking has improved dramatically. Don't anyone doubt it, just do it. Greg your RH drill is v good too by the way!

By the way, whats next???

J

Re: how to chip

I agree with jman and jpmonkey on the chipping with cupped wrist. It has greatly improved my chipping skills. I am still working with s4par on the full swing (waggle and cup thread.) I've been doin it but still am not getting the result I want. I'm sure he'll get me "straightened" out before too long though.. Thanx for the time spent s4par.

Re: how to chip

another good tip i have ehard to help with chipping is that you always want to land on the green anywhere close to 3 feet to the edge of the green so you can get it rolling as soon as posible.

now you want to walk from your ball to the 3' zone and then from that 3' zone to the hole. you agre getting a ratio of paces from ball to zone and zone to hole.

here is what you do with that ratio. if the ratio is 1/1 then use your pw, it it is 1/2 use your 9i, 1/3 8i, 1/4 7i, 1/5 6i.

that means if you walk 2 paces to the zone, then 10 paces to the hole, that would mean you would need more roll and the ratio being 1/5 you would use your 6i.

or 4 paces to zone 8 paces to hole you would want your 9i because that is 1/2 ratio.

enough examples i think you get it. that works great for me.

Re: how to chip

Chipping like a putting stroke works for simple chips, and based on the kind of carry/roll ratio, you choose the clubs accordingly. Personally, I feel that this method is very effective for simple chips, you don't need to feel much and you can 'lock' your arms/wrists in a sense.

But for longer chips and more difficult (bad lies) chips, you need to develop a bit more feel and control, and that's where I would go with cupping the wrist on the backswing. This also works with bunker play...

Re: how to chip

If people haven't tried this you really are missing out. I had always been taught to just use the "putting style of chips." After trying this now for 3 str8 practice sessions, I CAN TELL YOU IT WORKS WELL. It feels a lot more natural. HECK OF A LOT MORE CONSISTENT and the ball goes on target a lot more often. It is also simple to implement.

I recommend people try it.

what about it you had to carry the ball up a steep slope to a pin right on the edge and the total length is only 15 feet, this is the way to go

Re: how to chip

I've used this for last few weeks too and find it the most consistent way to chip I've come across yet. Shootin, you mention compression and check, the one thing I've not been able to do is chip, two or three hops and a check. Happened a couple of times but I wasn't aware of doing anything different. Why? and How?

first it depends on the greens, Soft and fast are the most ideal, chipping off a tight lie, and a soft cover ball with clean grooves. If your greens are running slow with long grass there will not be enough friction

Re: how to chip

Well greens are fast on course I play but for last few weeks with all the rain they have softened considerably alright. Also, when I'm practicing I am using range balls, so prob not as good as real balls. I'm normally chipping off a mat but have a practice area which I can use off real grass.

So, better to do it off the mat to get a better connection, with a good ball with a soft cover and a green that is receptive but still fast?
