Should I swing the driver in exactly the same way as when I'm hitting an iron? The only diffence should be that I am aiming to catch the ball on the upswing rather than on the downswing the mechanics of the actual swing should not change. Is this correct?

imho i try and swing like a 6 iron only not short iron swing

Check out the "golf lessons" page on this site. There's an excellent video of a good swing. I like to look at the frame-by-frame pro swings in Golf Digest and Golf magazine. You'll see the common characteristics of a good swing.
