Leaning the shaft

I was wandering what affect leaning the shaft has on distance and ball flight.
Does having your hands ahead of the clubface address, so the shaft is leaning towards the target, help to get more distance?

Re: Leaning the shaft

Leaning the shaft forward (having your hands far ahead of the ball) decreases the effective loft of the club. The ball will fly lower, but can fly just as far if you have power at impact.

Some players have more consistent contact with their hands further ahead of the ball than the "average" player. I think its because you preset the wrists in a cocked position. You basically return to that position at impact, hands infront of the clubhead.

Now, if I want to hit it high, I put my hands EVEN with the ball and still play it in the middle of my stance (say for a 8 iron). I do not reduce the loft of the club with this setup.

the reason your hand ahead at impact results in more distance is because you are rotating your body your body that much more if you have your right hand supped at impact. that makes you turn your body more to get the club at impact instead of barley rotating the body and using the arms and hand to get to the ball making your swing arc shorter...so the longer arc results in a accurate long powerful shot.

Re: Leaning the shaft

"Late Hit" is what the term is.

When you clear your left side and let your upper body lag behind, your hands will be ahead of the ball at impact.

As said above, the right wrist will be cupped more, giving you more explosive power at impact.

Clearing your left side properly without standing upright AND creating lag between your shoulders and hips is the HARDEST thing in golf to do. However, once you do it right, you will hit amazing golf shots.

Re: Leaning the shaft

Not necessarily! Just because you lean the shaft forward doesn’t mean you will….

1) clear your hips
2) swing from the inside
3) make contact with the ball before turf
4) NOT cast or FLIP the clubhead though

I could go on and on, but those are the major ones.

However, that may work for you! You may have a slightly lower ball flight but it may be much more consistent. It may put a TON of backspin on the ball and help you stop it on the green, especially if you make contact with the ball 1st, then the turf.

not nessasarily but it might help, that helps me get there at impact that and a huge factor is cupping the wrist as the first move in the backwswing. some people teach that the arms should be fully extended right after impact but some people dont understand that. it helped me to realize that the right arm is normal to be bent during imact and straiten after impact.

so cup right hand as first move back, and you will probly need to have the right arm bent at impact to keep the cup. if you don't inderstand looke at that link i put there earlier. also look up post on cuping and cocking and hand shake drill.
