My new move!

After my lesson yesterday with my pro, he pointed out that I was still moving laterally too much on the backswing. This was bringing my left knee closer to the right knee and destroying a tight coil. Also causing a little RP!

After a slight widening of my stance and a focus on maintaining the distance between my knees, I was striking the ball well. However, it still felt like I could get a bit more power.

However, the real “CLICK” didn’t happen until an hour ago. I read an article about head movement on the downswing. Now some may be saying, “you shouldn’t move your head.” I say hear what I have to say and see….

At the top, my first move is slightly lateral. I move my left hip towards the target. IF I maintain the proper spine angle forward, my head drops away from the target and stays behind the ball. From there, I can fully straighten my left leg and rotate aggressively though the ball. But instead of feeling like my shoulders were rotating, I felt the weight shift MUCH more to the left heel. I had a nice reverse – c finish.

This head movement is much different than what many people do. They thrust their head towards the target, which creates an over the top path.

I was hitting bombs. According to the owner of the range, a certain storm drain at the end of the range is 275 yards out. I was carrying it. And it felt effortless. Almost felt like my arms weren’t doing anything. It felt like the less I tried, the further I hit it.

My advice here….Go to the top of your backswing and make your normal 1st move, stop, and then see where your head goes.

not quite sure what you are saying here.... but keeping head still(laterally) is very key. jack nicklaus' teacher used to hol him by the hair to make sure his head stayed still. if anything you can move your head a bit foward in the backswing and a bit back in the downswing if anything, as tiger used to do but that is hard to move the exact amount and leads to inaccuacy so he changed. but you are correct that you never want to move you head foward in the dowsnswing to get that reverse c. one thin that might help people keep there head still is keep you head "up". not really up, but deffinatly not down. if it is down then it interfeers with your shoulder rotation. you want to have it in line with your spine and look down with your eyes. another thing jack did to help keep head still is look slightly to the right at adress to get a bigger shoulder turn

Re: My new move!

it is ok for the head to move off the ball on the back swing, then back to the ball when the first move down occurs, and then coming into impact it will have a distinct lean back because of the slight reverse C in the body. Head does not have to stay perfectly still

Re: My new move!

"head inline with the spine." That's a perfect way to look at it!

My head is not going towards the ball (coming over the top) and its not going away from the ball (pushing my hips towards the ball). Rather, staying even with my spine.

I am not making an effort to DROP my head. I am making an effort to move my lower body first, which tilts my spine and head SLIGHTLY away from the ball.

Re: My new move!

The timing of the weight transfer is a key depending upon your flexibility; for us older players, a little more weight transfer is needed to make up for lack of full coil. Younger players can get that coil and don't need as much weight.
head behind the ball at impact is key for driver but irons are a more descending blow so head can move a little more ahead bringing the hands down hard on the ball not the turf.
Timing, tempo and fundamentals.

Re: My new move!

...totally agree.

I was having my best success with the driver keeping the head back. However, my mid to long irons had similar results.
