Question for all the scratch, or almost scratch players out there.

On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate (on a relaxation to tension meter) the following body parts throughout the golf swing?

With Relaxation being a (1), and Tension being a (10)

Head
Shoulders
Arms
Wrist
Hands
Torso
Waist
Legs
Feet

Re: Question for all the scratch, or almost scratch players out there.

Hi
I play off 1 h/cap. i don't like to use the word RELAXED , this word denotes being in a state of relaxation. this can lead to a sloppy swing.

i prefer to use the expression " tension free" , becuase the word denotes being free from tension but still alert.

Re: Question for all the scratch, or almost scratch players out there.

Head = 1 (if you mean thought tension), 2 (if you mean neck)
Shoulders = 2
Arms = 4 (Left), 3 (right)
Wrist = 2
Hands = 3 (Left), 3 (right)
Torso = 5
Waist = 5
Legs = 5
Feet = ? No idea if I ever even feel my feet in a swing.

Good point, I had a tough time coming up with words that were not too suggestive or confining.

So how would you rate your swing parts on a 'Tension fee to Tension' meter?

I think this will be interesting and helpful to those of us that are not single digit players.

hey greg
if you ever hit a wayward shot into i 4 ball waiting to tee off on the next next tee , you would know exactly how tense your feet felt, as they were carrying you off to safety

i'm sorry for the flipant reply. but really , the amount of tension is a personal thing because even though we all understand the basic formula for a good swing . there are always going to be pats of the golf swing that cuases tension, for a variety of reasons , in us all.

This was meant to shed some light on the feel of the body parts in the swing, if you can't translate or choose not to that's fine, others may find it helpful.

Not everyone understands the "basic formula for a good swing", what one feels is very important; this is what many instructors try to explain. I think that the degree of tension (or in your case, Tension Free) will vary in degree, but the overall relationship to each body part will be somewhat similar.

I see folks beating the hell out of golf balls on the range, and remember when I was there a few years ago. I only wish someone had told me how my body should feel during the golf swing vs. saying simply don’t hit so damn hard.

Re: Question for all the scratch, or almost scratch players out there.

believe me AL. i am not taking your thread lightly. but you have to remember that on average, the golf swing is over in less than 1.65 seconds.

One of the main reasons that you see people aimlessly smacking golf balls on the driving range is because they believe that practice makes perfect. and we both know that PRACTICE MAKES PERMENANT , not perfect.

if we hope to improve as golfers then we have tob PRACTICE WITH A PURPOSE.
There is absolutely not enough time throughtout the whole swing to record which part of our body felt the most tension, instead we either say " i was tense" or "i was relaxed" ... i hope this clears it up for you.

Al , if you were once there, why not relate to us the feeling that you now experience through your swing and let us know how it differs from the way that you swung a few years ago.

remeber: sometimes we are our own best teacher.

My bad aftford, I thought this section was called "Golf Swing Instruction". Thanks for your helpful input on the thread though.

Re: Question for all the scratch, or almost scratch players out there.

the golf swing is like a coiled spring.
If you feel more tension in a specific area of the swing then the coil is lost.
all parts of the body should work in unison or there is no point in following the teachings of the great proffesionals.

since we are all built differently,tension throughout the swing is a totlly personal thing .

AL. the main point that YOU and other begginers have to remember is:
the basis of all good swings originates from adhereing to sound fundamantals. Forget about TENSION, because in golfing terms it is a NEGATIVE EXPRESSION.

May jesus bless you

I am not a scratch golfer, so I can't comment.
