Unhappy overswing

Hi,
Being a swatter (caused by overswinging) I have been trying the RHD + "normans secret" and keeping flex in my right knee during the backswing.
At the range the results are excellent but I cannot readily transfer this onto the course.
I believe all the faults are caused by the chain reaction due to overswinging.
Keeping the flex in my knee reduces this but I still seem to periodically overswing, moreso with a wood.
I believe that this is coming from a bent left arm (collapsed) at the "top" of my backswing.
When I "stiffen" this arm I loose all feel and control.
Any ideas how to maintain a shorter swing ?
Thanks
Snake

Re: overswing

hi Snake,

Just try to keep it as short as you can, Try a shot that is like a punch and then graduly start to rebuild your swing back to normal and then do the rhd thing again.
Hope this works,

Liam,

Re: overswing

Hi Snake,

An Overswing will definately cause you too swat and with a bent left arm it isnt good! :-)!

How about you do some swing in front of a mirror and stop when the club is at parrelel, really try to remember the feeling of what its like to have the club at parrelel. Then with that feeling you can trust your swing on the course.

Hope it helps,
Ricky

Unhappy Re: overswing

Thanks for that advice but when practicing without a ball its easy to stop.
When swinging on the range with n iron (6-iron) its easy-ish to stop.
When on the course (or range with wood) I cant stop short.
My arm continues to move, bending and folding.
Any ideas ?

Re: overswing

It has to be a conscious effort at this point, and you have to keep doing it until it becomes natural. A 3/4 swing should be good at this point, because it only feels like a 3/4 swing but is probably already a full swing.

Overswinging can be due to the fact that you are trying to get that extra bit of juice out of it. I suspect if you hit 10 balls with a 3/4 swing, the overall result (distance and consistency) is not any worse than 10 with your current full swing

Right on Simon, its actually probably better since you can really accelerate into the ball. Look at Moe Norman for a prime example

Unhappy Re: overswing

Hi,
Thanks to you all for your valued comments, however..........
I dont doubt that a short, accelating swing is better than a lengthy, swatty one BUT how to achieve a tight position without a bent arm ?
Just "shorten your swing" is easily said but not so easily achieved.
Any drills etc ?
Snake

Re: overswing

Hi snake I wonder if you would be able to tell, is the arm bent all the way, or does it only get bent between 3/4 to full swing? My issue with my wrists, they are in very good position and plane 3/4 back, or I would even say 9/10th of the way back. It's that extra last bit where everything starts to break down because I try to get that little extra power out of it.

One advice I've heard before - cut out the middle portion of a 1.5l softdrink bottle, and attach that around your left elbow. Apart from that, I guess really the best way is to keep practising the backswing and just keep checking and ensuring that your left elbow is straight? :P

Re: overswing

hi snake, i played in a pro am last year and was surprised how short some of their backswings were, maybe watching lots of videos or getting to a tournament may help you also.

i watched a video of garcia and he never got the club pointing at the target line at top of swing, (big shock). i know when i forshorten my backswing to a little past parelell to the earth i play better, i also agree that on a full shot this is hard to do as we associate longer swings with more power.

good luck
