too much draw/hook

Hi

leading on from ym last tread, I am having a massive problem with draw and the odd hook. I posted this in another thread but it wasn't titled right to get the reponses!

Basically through my irons and fairway woods I hit a consistent, respectably long and above all controlled draw. As soon as I get the driver in my hands it's like a lottery. Mainly too much draw, a few hooks and then (prob through over compenstation in setup and club face position on impact) a high fade.

Any ideas?

I also overswing which whilst a problem all the pros I have worked with have said I manage to control with good hand eye co-orindation However, this is something I want to get rid of to improve consistency.

So....views and comments on massive draw/hooks and caused/drills to resolve an overswing are more than welcome. There are some very knowledgable people on this site!

Re: too much draw/hook

hi jc,
this is spooky, this thread could be mine, the same faults were driving me crazy so i had a video lesson this week, i wanted to see for myself what the hell i do different that i hit a screamer on one hole and the next hook or slice into the cabbage.

my problem and this may be yours too as the symptoms are the same was set up. i was standing too close to ball, hands too near body, this is more obvious with driver, when your / my timing is spot on we can compensate 9 iwa told my hand eye coordination makes up for a lot) and send the ball on its way great but if our timing on downswing is just a little out, disaster. i also was overswinging, something i would not have believed if it wasnt for video as i really thought my backswing was if anything a little short.

my pro got me to set up in the same manner as advocated on the golf lessons at the top of this page, try it mate, take your normal set up, mark your posititions, then set up as pro in lessons above reccomends, you may find you are a good 460 driver head further away than before.

as for swinging too far back i am trying to just not swing as far, not easy as i have been hitting millions of ball this way and habits are difficult to change.

hope this helps, i am just a sixteen h/c, so just passing on what my pro pointed out to me.

Re: too much draw/hook

Hi

Thanks all for the feedback. I will updat the thread after my lesson.

I work hard on posture and setup (as I believe this is the main cause of the majority of swing faults! I have had this drummed into me since working for a club pro as a teen).

Cheers

Dan

Re: too much draw/hook

Hi

most problems with hooks occur when ther is a problem with the grip and coupled with a shallow swing plane. The reason this problem does not occur with your irons is because we naturally have a steeper swing plane with them than we do with our woods.
Good news: since you dont hook your irons i would say that your grip is fine and we only have to address your swing plane. I have a really easy drill that will help to steepen your swingplane with your woods.

The wall drill.
Stand upright, about a foot away from a wall ( make sure you have room to swing your club ) now take your normal set up , make sure your butt dosn't touch the wall. Now slowly start your back swing , if you hit the wall with your club at any point in the backswing , your swing is too flat.
The aim is to swing your club to the top of your backswing without touching the wall.
This will really help to steepen your backswing but you must do it very slowly in order to get a feel for the position of the club shaft.
Once you can do this without touching the wall , try hitting a few balls and you will see a difference in your ball flight. this drill takes patience and perseverance..but it will work . i promise.

I want you to check your ball position at address. for your driver the ball should be just inside your left foot.

cheers
.

Re: too much draw/hook

Hi

Thanks all for your input, there have been some very helpful comments.

I have had a lesson today and the problems are resolved. So for anyone who is interested the feedback from my coach was as follows:

Firstly I need to stick my arse out more to get my knees behind my hips, then flex my knees slightly more. This gives a more stable and balanced base for my setup.

Secondly my grip was fine, though making adjustments to fix the problem occasionally masked the issues and gave more inconsistency so sticking to my normal grip is a must as it is the right one!

Lastly, relex my right arm and bend the elbow a bit as it was causing my arm alignment to the left, contibuting to the hook (right arm above left).

So with a new pre-shot routine, giving me confidence in my setup and the feeling that I am set to make a confident swing thought free swing again. The result a long straight shot and belief that is is possible to consistently drive the ball futher than 260 yards!

Thanks again for all the input - it is great to see that there are people as hooked on this game as me!

And when I say drive the ball more that 260 yards - I mean 260 yards in play consistently. I am not a fan of playing from the rough!

Re: too much draw/hook

I had a major hook problem with every club in the bag. My pro told me to focus on swing left through impact since my path was comping from way inside the downswing plane. Any drills to correct this would be apreciated. Along the same lines, what are some good drills to work on compressing the ball better.
