Golf swing thought...

For some reason I have the hardest time just trying to let my arms drop into the slot, if I could just let my arms drop down in the swing I bet I could actually have a killer golf game. I have a nice slowly paced backswing but it's all screwed up because I can't get the feeling of pulling on the rope to get the club back on plane... I need an easy swing thought, something to get my swing back in gear.

Thanks,
Jason

Re: Golf swing thought...

My current swing thought is 'right elbow on the hip' for the downswing.

I load up going back, then put my elbow on my hip for my downswing.

Using this, I shot a PB 44 for 9 holes a couple days ago (and haven't been out since).

YMMV.

Re: Golf swing thought...

Do you deliberately drop the arms that low and then flick the wrists through the ball.... It just seems to me that you wouldn't have any power when you get that far down towards the ball. It's probably going to feel uncomfortable as hell as I try to hit the ball doing this from now on.

Re: Golf swing thought...

Hey JRock:

Try to feel as if your legs are initiating the downswing just before you have fully coiled in the top of your backswing. This is called the transition and this move is responsible for the feeling of the arms dropping down by gravity and by the momentum of the hips rotating forward being driven by the legs. You actually want to feel as if you are moving the club into the very first part of the downswing with your feet & legs.. moving the hips... moving the torso.... and the arms are just connecting the club to the torso. The arms do not propel until they are at waist height on the downswing. This is the trickiest part of the swing but if mastered will produce the drop into the slot, late hit, and all other good golf terminology associated with the the swing. Of course you need a solid grip and backswing motion as well but to get the feeling of dropping into the slot you will need to master the transition.

Look at swing sequences of pros in action in slow motion to see what the transition should look like.

Good luck

good post and to add to it, if you loose your spine angle at the top you will have a much more difficult time doing this. Keep your spine angle and you will coil/load, then the coil will want to uncoil/unload naturally, and this will help lead to a transition that happens lower body first

Thumbs up Re: Golf swing thought...

Hi,

Initially you should not think about dropping your arms. Start the downswing by a slight sideways shift of your hips initiated by your left knee then start to gradually unwind them, your arms will automatically start to drop down into the slot, all you need to do then is drop your right elbow a little into the front of your right hip and you are ready for the release through the ball.

Regards
Brian

My right elbow doesn't fly away on the backswing, I keep it close to my body. It's not much of a drop then as I turn through the ball with passive arms - my shoulders and hips are open at impact.
