Club pounds the ground:

This is not a problem that is seriously affecting my play, it is more like a phenomenon that only happens about 1 in 20 to 30 swings. I'll be swinging along feeling really good about my swing kissing the ground and ball real nicely, then out of nowhere, seemingly, I'll swing and my clubhead will pound into the ground as much as a foot behind the ball . The club doesn't even get to the ball. A big clump of dirt and grass is pounded out of the ground.. More often than not this will happen on a practice swing and I have the opportunity to smooth things out before stepping to the ball.

Seems almost cathartic (a cleansing of all bad mechanics in one swing). Anybody got any ideas on why this might be happening?? I am just awed every time this occurs.

Re: Club pounds the ground:

Look for patterns in which club you used, under which circumstances and in any certin lies.

It may be where you need to hit it a little extra, inbetween clubs and you take the lower to hit it harder...or maybe the shape you needed to hit it is a fade and you know you are loosing a little distance so you go at it harder... Something like that.

Otherwise, if you think there a gremlin in your head that likes to play too, you are doomed to always have this fiend...

My Dad has these, and he calls them demons. They are nice names, like the Sammy Kay, Ike and Ollie North demon. They describe his flaw on that particular swing (Swaying the hips, swinging only the arms, and hitting only from the right side...respectivly) so he can catagorize and excersize it out on the next shot...so I think he would call your flaw maybe the "Thor" (not because this is his cat's name, but becase Thor uses a hammer and pounds the ground to create lightning) -- just thought I would pass this on as it seems to help him a lot...you know...to simply deal with flaws because it is really never "your" fault but a demon has to be controling your swing and having fun watching you writhe in pain.

I love it , Thanx Greg.. From now on it's Thor. No doubt about it. Thor made me do it. Then I will simply go into my excorsism routine and play on until the spell wears off and he appears again from out of the depths of hell or perhaps it should from beyond the clouds of darkness.. That one gets two thumbs up!!. LOL..
