Steep swing--hitting from the top?

Every once in a while during a round (though sometimes 3 or 4 times), I hit a popup with my driver, caused, I guess, from a steep swing from the top. I wonder if this is caused by "hitting from the top."

At any rate, are there some tried, true, and relatively simple solutions for this malady? There is little quite as disconcerting.

Thanks,
Bill

Re: Steep swing--hitting from the top?

could be that the back swing is a little quick, causing you to kind of jump at the ball/hit from the top

Thumbs up Re: Steep swing--hitting from the top?

Hi Bill,

There are two basic causes for this:

1) Ball teed to high (more than half the ball sitting above the clubface)

2) As you infer, coming down too steep. If this is the case you will need to work on dropping your hands straight down at the start of the downswing, this will get the club on plane. It is a good fix for coming over the top but also cures a steep downswing.

Please look at the attached URL for a good video lesson on this:

Also, make sure you’re making a "real" shoulder turn, rather than just pulling your arms back and lifting them up on the back swing.

Re: Steep swing--hitting from the top?

I think, kbp, you may had put your finger on the problem. I have a tendency not to complete the shoulder turn. This, in my mind, would cause me to come down too steeply and hit the embarrassing popup.
