Lessons & sway....

I have been taking golf lessons, and in particular, I am working on putting the weight on the inside of my rear foot, without having that knee sway. Does anyone know of any good drills to help me with this….

Thanks,

James

Re: Lessons & sway....

put a golf ball under the outside of your right/trial foot and that prevents you from swaying and helps you keep the weight on the inside.

what I do is on my backswing I think about the inside of my trial foot and push down on it and rotate around that, then on the downswing i plant all the wieght on my front foot and and then rotate around that. jsut something you could try

usually if people stay in there spine angle they will not sway, so I would work on staying in the spine angle. Take your arms, put them across your chest in an x holding your shoulders, get into posture, now turn back while staying in spine angle, and do this 10 times or so to get the feel. did you stay on the inside of your foot? and just in case you did not know, spine angle is kept in the area between the hips and lower back, no need to worry about middle or upper back

Jamesh,
Sounds to me like you are losing your balance during swing. Although may not be discernible to you whilst swinging but guaranteed majority of amateurs swing out of balance without knowing.
Great exercise is: Use a 7 iron at range and swing with both feet together for a full bucket. You will see straight away whether you are swinging in balance. Generally taking the club to top does'nt create to many problems but downswing will tell the true story. When you can swing back and down without moving all over, you will see that even swinging like this you will hit the ball the same if not more then you usually do. When you can hit a ball with feet together creating solid impact and direction, start slowly ( slowly) opening stance and create same feeling. In essence balance in my view is the heart of the golf swing.

I agree with this exercise. I actually use it as my pre-shot routine before every shot. It reminds me not to swing so hard and to swing has if my feet were tied together (ala "A Gentleman's Game") if I would swing too hard, I'd fall over.

Re: Lessons & sway....

You are absolutely right! I have a major problem with balance. Even at the top of my swing I feel off balanced. I think, in part, it may be owing to a reverse pivot, which I have been working on. I think I have also been swinging too hard, and I have slowed my swing down big time. Thanks for the drill, much appreciated.

The post earlier about a golf ball under my rear foot so I can get a sense of my weight positioned on the inside of my rear foot was also good - I took it a step further. While at the hardware store I bought a door stopper/Wege - the slope has gradations, which will allow me determine how much support I want on the outside of my foot - in order to place the weight on the inside of my foot - this is a bit convoluted --- but it works.

Re: Lessons & sway....

Sway is not the huge problem many pro's will tell you it is. The problem is most pro's want your money and will use any excuse to take it, like tearing down your swing but ignoring a few simple tweaks that could correct a problem.
I think the PGA must teach these guys how to be vague and carniverous when it comes to dealing with students; don't tell them much and eat their bankroll as fast as you can.
Good luck and don't worry about sway, its all a matter of timing and how you arrive at impact. If you sway, the one thing you don't want to do is set up much behind the ball; with sway, you will get bahind the ball fine with no sway, you need to set up angled behind the ball.

Ahh, the reverse pivot. That was a dragon I had to slay when I began lessons. There are many suggestions to help that problem but basically set up with a proper spine angle and just being conscious of the problem before taking the club back are as good a thoughts as any. It took a lot of work for me.

Re: Lessons & sway....

One other drill you might try....if you have not tried it...is to point your right knee inwards towards the left leg or somewhat towards the ball. This would put some weight on the inside of your right foot. Leave the pressure there throughout your swing. This is similar to the ball under the foot drill but without the ball. I am assuming you are right handed. Left handers do just the opposite. The net effect is to stop the sway to the right.

Re: Lessons & sway....

Golfseeker I started pointing my right knee in alittle. It helped me from swaying. Your the first one to bring it up.
