Drill to find the perfect position at the top?

I can't remember if it was here, but I remember reading somewhere a drill to reproduce the correct position at the top... Can anyone point me to this, or care to tell me what it is?

I think my backswing has been way too flat recently and I'm pretty sure I'm getting in the wrong position at the top.

Thanks!

Jonathan

not sure if the shoulder tap is what you are talking about, but it is a method of checking correct postion at the top

Re: Drill to find the perfect position at the top?

I don't think it was that drill, but all the same, that sounds a very useful check-point.

I was doing some other reading last night and it said to try and visualise pointing your thumbs at your right shoulder at the top of the backswing. I guess this establishes the same position as the 'tap drill'.

I'd be really interested to see how this affects my game since this feels like a much more up-right swing plane that I have been using. Previously my backswing has been very flat with it being more of a rotation around my body rather than there being any 'picking-up'.... anyway, I'll try and get to the range later and try this out

Hi,

Yes, the shoulder tap drill is a good check.

Another check point is to feel that your right forearm and wrist at the top are holding a tray like a waiter, also check your left wrist is flattish.

Regards
Brian

Re: Drill to find the perfect position at the top?

Grip the club and get into your setup position. Then hinge your wrists so that your arms are parallel to the ground and the club at 90 degrees to your arms. Then lift your arms so that the club comes to rest on your right shoulder (assuming you are right handed). Then rotate your upper body so that your back is facing the target and extend your left arm and you are in the perfect position at the top.

That one is important. For me, a 'cupped' left wrist on the top results in an open clubface, and the collapsed wrist seem to encourage 'casting' - both of which in turn can cause slicing.

When i remember to force my left wrist straight, it helps me to stay on the plane and not go over the top.
