HELP - skying the ball with IRONS

Anyone else do this? My irons go really high really fast, and i'm about 10-20 yards short on every club. So do my drives, they just zoom up into the sky straight off - I was struggling to hit over 200 yards, when on the course last week it was going 260.

Need help quick. I'm almost going nuts. Thanks.

is your right elbow getting stuck?

I'm no pro, but it sounds like a classic case of flipping hands. In other words, the clubhead is beating your hands to the ball. It's a race, really, and your hands need to win, every time.

It's probably safe to assume you're not taking divots, if you're flipping your hands.

High ball flight is normally due to a steep descending swing plane, this causes the ball to be pinched more into the turf creating additional compacting of the ball and backspin which launches it higher. It will also cause higher flight from a tee due to increased backspin.

It's strange with my irons I hit a nice penetrating shot, but with my driver I find I sky it quite a lot. Some guy told me at the range I was like hitting down on it I think it was what you said BrianW 'steep descending swing plane'. He said I should almost hit up on it. So I gather it should be a more sweeping motion?

Your driver should be past the bottom of the swing and hitting the ball with a slightly ascending blow, make sure the ball is positioned at the inside of your left heel, that you have dropped your arms at the start of the downswing (feel your right elbow dropping to your right side) so the club approaches the ball on a similar plane to that at address. Another swing thought is that the ball is sitting under a low shelf about 6 or 7 inches high and you have to hit it out with your driver without striking the shelf on the way down.

Yep letting my right elbow drop next to my right side worked a treat thanks a lot .

I've been flipping my hands and had pretty good luck with my irons. Lately I've had some success at reducing the flipping. Of course, changing your swing is very frustrating (missed hits and such.) I can't figure out how to keep my hands in front of the ball at impact. Any suggestions?
