Thumbs down Im shanking. HELP

Hi,
I have developed a shank with all my irons, but most of all my long irons. im sure i have tried everything. The thing that might help me figure out what i am doing, is that after i hit the shot, weather it shanks or tops, the club face is way to far closed. Its as if the face closed because i hit the hosel. Im not sure. I think the problem may be that my grip is twisted too far right (looking down on myself) although my grip if fine when i set up. I saw a drill on another site telling me to have a few practise swings, then step up to the ball and hit at the same time (happy gilmore style). This worked perfectly although i dont know what it achieved. I have been trying to figure out what the difference is but i cant get it right. Have any ideas that might fix it?
cheers

Re: Im shanking. HELP

Your shanking is probably caused by the swing path coming outside to in along with your weight being too far on your toes.

Try keeping your weight evenly distributed between the toes and heel, look to bring your down swing more inside to out. Try setting up with the ball nearer the hozel and then hitting towards the toe, this will encourage a better path.

Re: Im shanking. HELP

Hi Doggy,
I have had this shank prob for a month. I nearly went around the bend. Having discussed with my coach, a conclusion was reached as follows:

1. lack of a full shoulder turn.
2. Standing too near the ball.
3.Club face passing the hands on the downswing.

I worked on these issues and thankfully the problem went away.
Hope this helps

Re: Im shanking. HELP

I started the season very good, some good nice and scores scored, got my first >100 score, which was very satysfying. But then it got worse and worse, and for some reason i started to shank, heavily. On course aswell as on the range, and nothing i did seemed to make it better.

During the season i have noticed a sensation in the lower left side of my back from time to time, not giving it much thought just that i had a sensation of overturing my body alittle much maybe.

Then, last sunday on the range i initially hit good straight shots with all irons, until something snapped, i felt my back was really there so to speak, and all my shots started to shank as usual..

So i took a few days off work before i head to a chiropractor which could state that my muscles in my lower back was stiff and had built up alot of tension.

What i gather now is that i was stupid not to listen to my body in the first place, when it started whining after a little to much bodyturning, but not really hurt at all. This effectively killed off my season ( in Norway, seasons aint all that long here :\ )

So just a healthy tips for all you out there, when your body tries to talk to you, listen to it and dont wave it away like i did, it can cost you dearly.

- Stian

Exclamation Re: Im shanking. HELP

How would you go about changing your swing from an out to in swing into a straight swing (so to speak)?

Re: Im shanking. HELP

Do this drill to get a slightly in - out swing path. Set up to the ball and drop your right foot back about 1ft and hit balls like this, this gets the club coming from the inside and gets you hitting a draw. Hit balls like this for a while and then set up normally again and you should feel the better swing path and start hitting nice draws.
