| Pouring on the speed... Guys I am trying to slow my downswing down enough to where I can feel that slot position, you know the position where gravity alone should set the club for you, but it's really hard to feel that... Any drills for that? I have been trying to complete my backswing and then slowly start speeding up the swing as I am going down towards the ball? Is that the proper way of accelerating through on the golf swing? Jason |

I try to consciously accelerate once my hands reach hip height. |

| Re: Pouring on the speed... I let my hands drop into the release position using their own weight, I then drive the club through with my right side using a late release of the wrist angle to generate speed. I don't like blowing my own trumpet but I can drive the ball a good distance and am rated with some of the longest hitters in my club, I am told by my fellow golfers that my swing is slow and smooth with very good results. My advice would be to concentrate on timing, avoiding power leaks and keeping a smooth tempo. You are on the right track though.

| Re: Pouring on the speed... Hi there, A very simple two second drill is to grip your club the wrong way around and swing the shaft, holding the clubhead..............you should create a swish through the hitting area, if you don't your releasing to early. Hope this helps Ian. p.s you can also do this during a round. |

| Re: Pouring on the speed... Dear :jrock909 Try This: With You Foot Together Swing At The Drive Range Few Balls (20 At Least) From One O'clock To 11 O'clock, Just The Upper Body No Hard Or Fast Swing Try Smooth Swing Don't Worry How Far The Ball Go. You Will Start To Feel Where You Right Arm Take Over At The Down Swing...now Go Back To A Normal Posture And Try A Downswing (smooth) And Accelerate When You Reach 8 O'clock(not before) With A Complete Folowthru..voila! |

| Re: Pouring on the speed... Start out with a very light grip pressure and maintain it all thoughout your swing (especially at the top of the swing and at impact). Swing as fast as it allows you to without needing to tighten your grip. Doing so will allow your clubhead to swing freely with increased speed. Warning: It won't feel powerfull but believe me the clubhead speed will go up!. The only time that you would need to grip tighter is when your hitting out of the rough. |

| Re: Pouring on the speed... Tina Mickelson (Phil's sister) is a golf instructor (and a very good one from what I hear ) says if you want to learn the proper move from the top is to just let gravity start your down swing. Do it at a slow pace and later on you can start to use more acceleration and speed. Fred Couples does a drill where he sets his club at the top (with no backswing) and just lets the hands, elbow and club drop straight down to his hip and then completes his swing. Nothing fancy, using just an easy rhythm and tempo. No force whatsoever. I think this is the same as what BrianW mentioned in this same thread. |
