Yes but if you don't pull it off it could go horribly wrong. Think about it, if you catch it well it could go 240 yrds into the trees leaving a lovely 80 yrd pitch through trees and shrubs. Nice!

Re: Fighting the wind

The KEYWORD in my previous post is PRACTICE. Practice until you know how to hit it. Practice slowing your swing speed down to that perfect point that will send the ball the correct yardage. You see, if you hit your 3 wood full swing speed and connect perfectly, you might actually hit it 240 yards. However, the shot we are talking about is a little different. Slower swing speed (perhaps a good starting point would be around 2/3rds or 65%) causes the ball to not travel as far as full swing. Do you grasp that concept? De-lofting the club causes it to hit a much lower shot. Slower swing speed coupled with a de-lofted club will give you a low shot that will drop in at a much lower yardage. Anyway, like I said before, the keyword is practice.

Re: Fighting the wind

Of course, if you are uncomfortable de-lofting your club, you could always get a driver with a small head and 8-9.5 degree loft. I have 290cc driver and what I did was cut the shaft at around 40 inches. It gives me great control and very low drives. I use it on windy days or as a number 1 fairway wood. Being a very versatile club, I can also slow my swing up and hit a nice low drive that will carry around 150 yards without the apex being anymore then 25 or 30 yards off the fairway. It took me some practice to perfect, but on a windy par 3 I can leave my usual high flying 7 iron in the bag, take out the "mini driver" and cut under the wind to the green. It works for me. It may or may not work for you. That's something you'll have to figure out for yourself.
