hitting out of rough

i actually get pretty good distance on my irons....but when i land in the rough(medium length) i tend to hit a little too much behind which causes me to lose maybe a club length on distance.........

i have a one plane swing ...so what tips can i use to help me out of the rough.........

MY SOLUTION.......JUST GO BY A HYBRID

however much the ball is sitting up is how much you choke down on the club. also, dont try and hit 5 irons out of the rough, personally once i go below a 8 iron, I do so with caution. Play the ball back a little and try to hit down steep.

Re: hitting out of rough

I was once given this advice by my pro and it has always worked for me.

I have always had a pretty flat swing, great for woods 'not much good for rough' when I am in the rough I simply stand with my feet a little closer together, which naturally does two things:

Brings you closer to the ball and makes for a steeper angle of attack into the ball.

It's like discovering the wheel, trust me.

Re: hitting out of rough

You've received good advice so far. Let me just add a few more pointers.

You need to make as clean a contact as possible.
- Setup with the ball in the middle (or a little back) of your stance.
- Have an very early wrist cock. This should promote a steeper blow on the downswing.

The rough will snag your clubhead and affect the clubhead speed and clubface angle.
- Hold the club tighter than normal. In a scale of 1-10 with 4 being the normal, hold it with about a 9 grip pressure.
- aim a little right of the target.

What club to use
- I still get the same distance from whatever club I use. The reduced carry is made up by extra bounce/roll due to lack of backspin.
- I can normally use up to a 5 iron from the rough.
- I bought a 9 wood (Cleveland) early this year to replace my 3 iron. I also discovered that it was so easy to hit it from thick rough. It was lofted enough to get the ball up quickly and it still gave me about 200 yards. I highly recommend this club.
