If the ball climbs quickly and then dies, there's excessive backspin being created somehow. Usually it's because you're placing the ball too far back in your stance and / or t-ing the ball too low. I would definitely experiment with ball position and check the impact position on the club face.

The driver needs to hit the ball as it is coming OUT of the bottom of the swing almost on an upward trajectory. So if you think about it, place the ball in such a way that it "gets in the way" of the club face. That's all there is to it.

You need to pay very close attention, so each time you set up EXACTLY the same way. Keep adjusting until you find the spot where the ball consistently goes on that perfect trajectory no slice or hook. Do the same nice easy swing you use for your irons. The way you strike your irons I would say you should EASILY be able to hit the ball 220-240 yards.

I think I remember you had a really nice swing so keep at it!

Re: Lack of Iron Power

Thanks James. You have reminded me of something, I do place the ball as far forwards as between my left heel and toe, so I don't think that should be a cause. However, I am already using the longest tee available (rubber tee placed under a mat at the golf range) but it still feels a bit low as I'm using a 460cc driver. Should the ball mark be exactly in the middle of the head, or should it be at the upper half?

What you have reminded me is the fact that I've always had the tendency to move my upper body and head forward at impact. That's probably a good explanation for a descending blow even though it's already teed so far forward.

I need to work on it much more.. Everybody says 220yds is easily attainable, but I've been playing golf for more than 15 months now and still no more than 180 yds with my driver :|

Re: Lack of Iron Power

Let me advise you of these things, very critical for you:
Driver: Tee the ball so 3/4 of the ball is above your 460cc. driver head; Why? You want to encourage the driver to hit on upswing from low to high; I like to waggle making sure my right shoulder is lower than left but very relaxed-no tension in arms. As I waggle, I mimic a low to high upswing.
Irons: I like to lean the shaft forward; more for short irons, less as the club gets longer-see my other posts on this.
Also, when downswing, I like to point or at least feel as if I am pointing the very end of the iron at the tip of the handle-down the ball to target line. This helps keep you down and through the shot.
Look at any pro and you will see the forward lean of shaft, meaning they take the club back clubhead first and bring the club down to impact with clubhead last.
Driver: hit with upswing
Irons: hit with downswing
Does this make sense to you all???
