Unhappy New irons and divots

I am a 16 year old left handed golfer and have been playing golf for about 4 or 5 years. At the beginning of summer vacation i was shooting 37 38 consistently. Recently i replaced my top flite tour irons with Callaway Big Bertha irons. I felt that i had outgrown my top flites and that there has been a major jump in golf technology since i bought the tour irons. Now, I am getting slightly too much divot mainly with my 4-8 irons. Also, i am averaging about 5 to 10 yards less distance with my new irons than my old ones. For example, Ill have 150-155 yards to the pin and i used to be able to hit 7 or even 8 irons for this shot. Now, its pretty much a 6 iron. Do you think this is because these new clubs are longer? Maybe i should have them cut down a little? Could it be the grip? Please help!

Dave,

Definately have them checked. A club maker can tell you if they fit you or need to be cut. If you get taller, you can have extensions put on the shafts when you regrip them later.

One word to the wise though, I had a set of custom clubs made up. Played well with them. I went to get my first set of "REAL" clubs. I went to my club were there was a barrel of demo six irons. I hit everything in the barrel. I tried them on the course and on the range. I hit best with Hogan's. That was my purchase. Sometimes just because its new technology, might not suit your game. Ya just never know until you try them!!!!

Fixed the divot problem

Hello,
I recently posted the new irons a divots problem. I wanted to thank you for the reply and also state a probable cause of the problem. Last time i went out on the course i just stood about half a step further away from the ball to attempt to fix the divot and distance problem. It seemed to work great. I actually got more distance with my new irons than my old ones. Does this solution seem logical? Also, i dont want to have the height adjusted because i am growing very fast. I sold my old irons because i felt i had outgrown them. Thanks!

Hi Dave,

It's good to hear of your success. It's like any new toy, you have to play with it a while to get a feel for it. New clubs are no different.

Keep it in the short grass,

GolfBald

hi golfbald,
One video is 3.71 mb and the other is 3.72. Today, on the course, however, i was pulling the ball very little if at all. I tried to achieve more height between my back and the club in the arch of my backswing. Does the solution make sense? Let me know about the video. Thanks

Dave,

I have a small mailbox right now (alot of video's). Please mail the best one to golfhelp01@yahoo.com or post them in the swing analysis section on the board. I'll check for it.

Hello again golfbald,
I am gonna try and get the video of my swing to you. The problem is that the disk the video is on is at my cousins house. I should get it soon though. Today, on the course i shot a 38. However, i wasnt overly pleased with my iron game. My chipping and putting saved me big time. This time the irons went straight, just too much divot. I hit 2 great shots one with pw out of the rough and one with 7 iron out of the rough. Those were two of about 7 times today where i didnt get to much divot on the irons. Now i have a real dilemma, when i stand up straighter to avoid to much divot i pull the ball, and when i get too much divot it goes straight. What a frustrating game.

Talking Video Upload

Hi DMBgolfer29,

If you want me to I will increase the size permission of the video upload for you if you cannot compress the video any smaller. It would be good to get it on the site.

that would be great if you could increase the size of the video capacity. My video is just over 3.72 mb. THANKS A BUNCH!
