Quieting my hands!

Hi peeps.

Sometimes in my swing I start getting abit handsy, start hitting some hooks here and there and my timing has to be pretty good to hit consistently good shots.

Lately I ahve found I have got handsy again in the takeaway which can cause me to get abit across the line at the top and start hitting some horrible hooks .

I think it might be because at address my hands are abit high, there isnt enough angle between my hands and shaft at address and then i start useing my left hand to takeaway the club, what do you think if I lower my hands at address so there is more angle between the shaft and my hands position and then if i feel as if im turning more to take the club back useing my bigger muscles!
Do you think this sounds the best thing for me to do (gregjwillis, shootin4par the ones that know what there talking about) ? When ever I get into swign trouble its always from my address position

Also I dont want no really mechanical reply to this post! ive trying my hardest to get away fro mechanics.

Cheers
rick

Re: Quieting my hands!

mabye it is your hands or maybe your turn. can you post a video? If you are hitting 20 yard draws, I know I have this problem when I come out of my spine angle/tush line, which flattens my swing path among other things. Basically what I am saying is body motion can change hand motion or hand motion can changle body motion, post a video of your set up and lets see. And keeping it simple is the way to go

Re: Quieting my hands!

im not hitting 20 yard draws, im either hitting quick snap hooks or time it well and hit it straight or block to the right lol! bit of eevrything :-s!

Im fed up with hitting it left, id love to eliminate the left side of the golf course!

Its definatly my hands not body!

Re: Quieting my hands!

Ive found its all caused by my strong left hand grip! I see 3 knuckles on my left hand! So im always going to be fighting a hook, by either sliding or not having my body OVER the ball at impact, my body will be to far behind the ball! Because I hit it pretty far for my size and age i think i need to calm this down and start going for accuracy!

Eliminate the left side of the golf course!

now ricky, understand I am trying to help you figure it out, dont discount it too fast on it not being the body. a quick snap hook should not be caused by a strong grip, an excessive draw yes, but snap hook no. That is a path issue and path issues are in good players normally caused by body movements. if you are coming up out of your spine angle for some reason then your hands will have to go out and around your hips because you do not have enough room for them to clear. So the result is a bad path and that causes blocks because the hands get stuck or that causes snap hooks because the hands have to go out and around the hips.

Re: Quieting my hands!

Hi shootin,

I went back to ben hogans book and read about the grip! Im going to spend the week building the grip back to what its suppose to be like! I hit some balls useing the grip hogan teaches in his book and didnt hit 1 shot left and i didnt hit 1 shot more than 20 yard right off my target with a driver.

Im pretty sure its my grip! Because then in the mirror i was doing backswings with a hogan grip and everything was perfect!

Re: Quieting my hands!

S4P is right, the body can be real key..... i was hitting some 90 deg hooks one day and i changed my grip to a rediculously weak (left hand thumb at 11:00 on club) to hit is strait. so that grip was not very confterble or normal and it wasn't my swing path, so i changed my grip back to normal and then worked on my lower body.... it was that i was rotating too early and keeping my lower body too quiet which allowed my shoulder then my hands to crossover way too early and thus hook it. so an open/cosed face at impac can be a grip issue or a rotational/sliding (lower body too quiet/to active) issue?

i think i heard somewhere that when Daily wants to hit a fade he just adds a bit of a slide or a more active lower body to acomplish that.

so if a grip fixed your issue that is good..... but as far as quieting your hands, that can be done by using more of your lower body and getting less rotation and more sliding (i hate to say sliding as i know that is bad, but i think you know what i mean by a more active lower body.

another thing that might help lessen the hand rotation is by lifting the head near impact. that slows the body rotation so the hands don't cross over too early.

Re: Quieting my hands!

But my grip has never been neatral anyway! A good swing starts with a good grip so I was going to have to change it some time in my life lol so i might as well change it now at 16 years old lol! with a strong grip it was causing me to slide and have to much active hands! as soon as i weakend my grip (its not weak its neatral now) my hands went quiet straight away and there was no slideing just turning which makes the swing alot more simple.

Today I didnt hit 1 shot left and i was hitting 10 -15 yard cuts with driver and irons i was hitting about a 5 yard cut, i could easily draw the ball all i had to do was just close my stance and release my hands REAL HARD and that produced a 5 yard draw!

I played 14 holes +2 which aint too bad considering i didnt make 1 birdie putt out of 5 chances.

Its still early days ill see how it goes over the weekend !
