The Club at Address

During setup I have been paying more attention to my club, and the clubs of others.

At setup – say with a six iron – should the sole of the toe of the club be touching the ground? I notice with some clubs, it does and with others it doesn’t . With a properly grounded club should all of the sole of the club be touching the ground?

Thanks in advance!

James

Re: The Club at Address

The toe should be slightly elevated while the heal is on the ground. In the downswing, with all that force going on against the shaft, the shaft bends in an arc downwards towards the ground in affect forcing the toe into the ground, so setting up and having a properly fitted club that has this toe slightly up in your natural setup will deliver the club flat to the ground.

What Greg said. Toe droop is a real phenomenon. The idea is to be able to slip a quarter (North America) under the toe at address. I forget the British monetary unit that's used by comparison.

However, my question, regarding the monetary unit method - should the whole quarter go under the toe, or is the toe raised just enough to get the quarter under it?

Re: The Club at Address

Greg & LowPost42 thanks for your reply! From the setup position is is hardly noticeable that the toe is slightly off of the groud. Some people I watch play it seems like a good portion of the front of the club is off the ground!

I will be playing tomorrow and I will check out my clubs. I have been re-reading a lot of threads at GTO there is a lot of good information at this site. Much obliged!

Re: The Club at Address

Greg,
You may have hit on something Ive noticed this past season. I use to hit straighter and sometimes left with my irons. The toe was slightly raised at address at that time. Prior to this past season.
I had them lengthened an 1", pro said I was a hair over standard. The clubhead now appeared to be flat on the ground at address. But what did happen is that I hit more fat shots and to the right this season. I may have been better off the former way or perhaps move club to have toe up a bit.
Something to look at this off season. Thanks.

Mike
