Good Or Bad?

I an a new player of five months. I just had two lessons and my instructor helped me adopt a one-plane more rounded swing. I used to come over the top but now on the takeaway I come inside. I draw my right foot back a few inches to adopt a more inside to out downswing. I used to slice horribly and would aim far left OB to just hopefully stay in play on the right side. Now I hit it pretty straight but sometimes the ball travels right to left or I hook it occasionally. Am I doing something wrong or does this mean my swing path is better?

Re: Good Or Bad?

It may mean that your grip is too strong. The way a ball starts is a path issue. How it curves is a face angle at impact issue. With draws and hooks, the face is closed relative to the path.

I'd start with a weaker grip and go from there.

edit: I said grip to small. I meant grip too strong. However, it may be grip too small, too. But I meant strong.

Re: Good Or Bad?

There can be many causes, I would concur with Lowpost:

Start by looking at your grip, is it too strong? If so try a more neutral grip.

Look at your clubface alignment at setup, is the face sitting closed to the target. If so straighten it up.

You could be getting overactive with turning your wrists over through impact.

Try these things first.

Re: Good Or Bad?

Yes I Do Think The Clubface Is Closed Relative To Target At Address. I Used To Do This Naturally When I Was A Slicer To Make Sure The Clubface Was Not Open Before Realizing I Had A Severe Ott Ans Out-to-in Swingpath. I Pretty Much Come From The Inside Now Thanks To Swing Changes(one Plane). Now If I Can Keep Clubface Square I Hit Very Solid Accurate Shots With This New Swing. My Pro Did Tell Me He Wanted Me To Start Overlapping Grip Instead Of Interlocking Because He Felt The Shaft Was Sliding In My Palms Going Back Which Helped Open The Clubface. I Have Fairly Large Hands. I Tried It And Hit A Few Bad Shots Then Abandoned That Grip. IT FEELS I DON'T HAVE THE CLUB UNDER CONTROL WITH OVERLAPPING GRIP.

Re: Good Or Bad?

IMO, Grip, like putting, is personal. You have to try them, then use what feels best.
